Canada’s Liberals sweep special elections as voters back Carney’s crusade against Trump

Canada’s governing Liberals have secured victories in three special elections on Monday, providing a significant boost to Prime Minister Mark Carney amidst an intensifying trade dispute with U.S. President Donald Trump.The Liberal Party claimed victory in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in Quebec, Beaches-East York in Toronto, and North Vancouver-Capilano in British Columbia.Carney framed the election results as a clear endorsement of his administration's trajectory."At this consequential time for Canada, voters have placed their trust in our government’s plan," he said in a statement.The biggest shift occurred in Quebec, where Liberal candidate Daniel Gobeil won decisively in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord. The district had been held by the opposition Conservatives since 2018, but the party fell to third place on Monday. The local economy relies on aluminum production and dairy farming, key sectors affected by the trade conflict.Nelson Wiseman, a professor emeritus of political science at the University of Toronto, said Carney enjoys higher approval ratings in Quebec than anywhere else in Canada, noting that Trump’s remarks about annexation resonate deeply there."Quebecers have the most to lose in an apocalyptic scenario where the U.S. absorbs Canada, and the status of the French language disappears," Wiseman said.The Liberals maintained control of the other two ridings. In British Columbia, Braeden Caley, Carney’s former deputy chief of staff, took North Vancouver-Capilano."The United States is getting a message tonight. Our leader has the support of the Canadian people," Liberal lawmaker Hedy Fry told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. in an interview.Cross-border trade negotiations broke down on Aug. 21 after negotiators failed to reach a compromise, leading Trump to enact 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion of Canadian exports. The special elections were prompted by lawmaker resignations earlier in the year.Daniel Béland, a political-science professor at McGill University, suggested the strong Liberal performance in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord stemmed partly from local backing for Carney’s Aug. 21 choice "to pull the plug on trade negotiations with the White House."Béland observed that the sharp drop for Conservatives creates trouble for party leader Pierre Poilievre. The Conservatives captured the riding with 34% of the vote last year, but dropped to roughly 13% on Monday. "These numbers do look bad," he said.Carney won office last year amid widespread public indignation over Trump's annexation rhetoric, promising to lessen Canada's economic reliance on its southern neighbor.
