Calvert-Lewin stars but Botman struggles - player ratings for Leeds v Newcastle

Twice forced Lukas Hornicek into big saves before second goal took final touch off him. A real threat. 8Anton Stach: Won a corner inside 32 seconds. That set the tone for Leeds' relentless display, even if he later wasted chance to score. 7Ethan Ampadu: Ensured Leeds kept pushing for more as he barked instructions. Saw Dominic Calvert-Lewin inadvertently block a vicious goalbound effort. 7Ao Tanaka: His goal took two heavy deflections but had the confidence to take the shot. Looking back to his best in recent weeks even if he was relieved to see one misplaced pass unpunished. 7Gabriel Gudmundsson: Caused Newcastle real problems with his runs down the left. Looked more a winger than a wing-back. 7Noah Okafor: Fine strike for Leeds' fourth, having also coolly pulled the ball back for Tanaka to let fly for his side's opener. 8Dominic Calvert-Lewin: Just loves this fixture. A trademark header came off Bogle for Leeds' second and then showed other side of his game to finish calmly on the floor for the hosts' third. Beaten easily by Calvert-Lewin for Leeds' second goal, slapped turf in frustration after the striker fired past him for the third and then failed to block Okafor's fourth. 3Sven Botman: Like Thiaw, could not cope with Calvert-Lewin and was skinned so easily for Leeds' second goal. 3Lewis Hall: Dragged out of position in build-up of Leeds' second goal. Not the night he had in mind after signing a new deal. 4Nico Gonzalez: Belatedly came off after just 19 minutes after the ball struck him in the head in the early stages. 5 Lewis Miley: Little he could do for deflection for Tanaka's goal, but was overrawed by Leeds' tenacious midfield. Had little time to find passing rhythm. 4Jacob Murphy: Continued in injured Anthony Elanga's absence, but did not offer enough protection and caused Leeds few problems going the other way. 3Yoane Wissa: Created Newcastle's best chance and at least battled and chased, even if his final ball was not always great. 5Harvey Barnes: Has a fearsome record against Leeds and eyes lit up when he danced inside the box only for Trafford to deny him. 5Matias Fernandez-Pardo: Full debut following his £51.4m move from Lille. Had little to feed off as Newcastle repeatedly played long balls forward. 4Subs:Sean Steur (on 19, Gonzalez): Thrown into the cauldron after Gonzalez went off. Could do little about deflection before Leeds' first goal but gave the ball away in build up to Leeds' second. Eighteen-year-old will learn from experience. 4Bazoumana Toure (on 58, Murphy) So rapid and pulled one back. Bright cameo as he pushes for a start. 6Joe Willock (on 58, Fernandez-Pardo): One decent chance landed on roof of net from tight angle. 5Tino Livramento (on 58, Dedic): Another step on return from injury.
