Calcutta HC disposes of BJP leader's plea after cops call 10 FIRs mistake of facts

(File photo)The Calcutta High Court on Thursday disposed of a petition filed by West Bengal minister Arjun Singh after Barrackpore Police said there was a "mistake of facts" in 10 FIRs lodged against him and that closure reports had been submitted before the magistrate.Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya took note of the police reports and closed the matter. The court had earlier observed on October 14, 2025, that the dispute appeared prima facie to be political in nature and had granted Singh interim protection from coercive police action, which was extended from time to time.All 10 complaints against Singh were filed on September 10, 2025, at various police stations under the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate. On Thursday, the Barrackpore police commissioner placed reports before the court, as directed at the previous hearing, stating that all 10 cases had ended in final reports citing "mistake of facts".Additional government pleader Suryaneel Das told the court that investigation in all 10 criminal cases against Singh had been completed and a "Final Report Mistake of Facts (FRMF)" had been filed before the trial court in each case. An FRMF is a police closure report submitted to a magistrate when an investigation finds that the facts or circumstances of an incident were different from those stated in the complaint, and no criminal offence is established against the accused. Taking note of the final reports, Justice Bhattacharyya disposed of Singh's petition challenging the FIRs.An earlier report by the commissioner on June 23 had said that all the complaints against Singh were apprehensive in nature. It had also said that no incident, as alleged in the complaints, had taken place within the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate area that led to a law and order situation. Singh has moved between the TMC and the BJP over the years, joining the saffron party in 2019 after leaving the Mamata Banerjee-led party, returning to the TMC in 2022 and rejoining the BJP in 2024.
