BYD unveils 49-ton electric tractor with 1,000-hp peak power, fast charging

Chinese automaker BYD has unveiled its advanced electric commercial vehicle lineup for Europe at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, Germany. The portfolio houses a heavy-duty tractor offering up to 373 miles of range and 1.5-megawatt charging. Presented on September 14 at IAA, the portfolio addresses urban distribution, municipal work, regional transport, and long-haul logistics. IAA is an international trade fair organized every two years by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). It serves as a platform for the commercial vehicles, logistics, and transport sectors. BYD is combining its vehicles with batteries, charging infrastructure, energy storage, energy management, and financial services to support fleet electrification through a single ecosystem. Heavy truck charges in about 20 minutes The flagship is a 4×2 electric tractor, named ETT 44, designed for combinations weighing up to 48.5 tons. Developed from the ground up as a dedicated electric platform, it uses a 651-kWh Blade Battery operating on an 851-volt architecture. Its powertrain produces around 733 horsepower under rated conditions and approximately 986 horsepower at peak output. BYD claims the truck can cover up to 373 miles on a single charge, positioning it for regional and long-haul freight operations. A standard CCS2 DC charger provides up to 420 kW, taking the battery from 20 percent to 80 percent in about an hour. BYD’s Megawatt Charging System raises charging power beyond 1.5 MW and cuts the same charging session to roughly 20 minutes. “We have already put FLASH Charging into practice in passenger vehicles. Today, we are bringing this technology to commercial vehicles, starting with our trucks. With 1.5 Megawatts of charging power, it can charge from 20% to 80% in about 20 minutes – delivering up to 248 miles of range. Less time charging. More time on the road,” said Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD. Extended warranty supports fleet operators BYD is backing the truck’s Blade Battery with a standard warranty of 10 years or approximately 746,000 miles. The company says this goes beyond the base-vehicle and battery warranties typically offered in Europe, where extended coverage is usually a paid option. The heavy-duty model also features a driver-focused cabin and multiple assistance and safety technologies. Adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, and blind-spot detection are included as standard. Beyond the flagship tractor, BYD displayed 4×2 and 6×2 rigid trucks, including swap-body and hooklift versions, alongside the E-Vali light commercial van and EYT 2.0 electric yard tractor. The portfolio spans approximately 3.9 to 48.5 tons, covering work from city deliveries to distribution-yard and heavy road operations. One ecosystem for fleet electrification BYD presented the lineup through its Total Cost of Mobility philosophy, which treats the vehicle, energy consumption, electricity pricing, charging infrastructure, operations, lifecycle management, and financing as parts of one system. Its vertically integrated approach brings vehicle development, Blade Batteries, megawatt chargers, energy storage, and energy management together. BYD revealed the model can reduce operational complexity, improve uptime, and accelerate the path toward profitable electric fleets. BYD’s commercial vehicles currently operate in more than 100 countries and over 400 cities.
