A MAJOR motorway used by more than 140,000 drivers a day is to close every weekday night for six weeks. Diversions will be in place to allow repairs to a landmark bridge. Work on repairing the Scammonden bridge, which is located just over the Greater Manchester border in West Yorkshire, starts on August 17. The work was due to start in April, with the bridge closed through to October. However, those plans were scrapped due to what National Highways described as “customer feedback”. A second start date of July 20 was also delayed due to moor fires in the area, which closed Woodhead Pass. This is one of the only other major routes from Greater Manchester to Yorkshire. Work will now begin with the M62 set to close from 8pm to 6am every weeknight. Most read in Motors Eastbound traffic will be diverted via A672, A58 , A646 , A629, while westbound traffic will be diverted via A629, A646, A58, A672. The bridge itself will remain closed weeknights until work is completed in January 2027. In a statement National Highways said: “We’re upgrading the parapets on Scammonden Bridge, which carries the B6114 over the M62 between junctions 22 and 23. “The bridge is getting new steel parapets to keep the bridge safe for the long term.” Comment now
