Busy UK motorway is hit by 3 YEARS of closures – and it’s starting from next week

A STRING of closures is set to hit a major motorway over a three-year period, sparking delays for thousands of drivers. The long-term restrictions will begin in less than a week’s time. Several junctions and slip roads will be closed for overnight works Credit: Wirestock The M5 will face a series of near-continuous overnight closures across the next three years, as a result of essential bridge repair work taking place. From September 1, a long-term traffic order will restrict overnight access between junction 19 at Portishead and junction 22 at Burnham-on-Sea. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! This means that between 8pm and 6am, the northbound M5 between junctions 22 and 20 and the southbound road between junctions 19 and 22 will be shut. Individual entry and exit slips at junctions 19, 20, 21 and 22 will also be closed, along with access to Sedgemoor services. The works are only expected to be completed by December 20, 2029. However, in a bit of good news for drivers, the restrictions will not all apply continuously. Instead, the traffic order allows National Highways to introduce individual closures and restrictions as the works progress. Motorists can also expect a temporary 50 mph speed limit, contraflows and width restrictions to be introduced throughout the repairs. Most read in Motors A three-week closure at junction 20 has also been planned starting in September, although the exact dates have yet to be confirmed. This means the southbound entry slip road will be closed continuously for the duration of the works, with diversions in place for motorists. 1 comment1
