Today, though, the music stops. As Labour MPs return to Westminster, they will be looking to him to deliver on Britain’s REAL problems: defence, welfare and a flatlining economy. So far the signs have not been good. Burnham has also got himself into a huge mess over Labour’s early prisoner release scheme — unnecessarily causing immense worry and heartache for the family of PC Andrew Harper before finally keeping his killers behind bars. In doing so, he is also about to free hundreds of highly dangerous prisoners serving indeterminate sentences. Most read in The Sun Of the 2,271 still on them, 1,415 already had to be recalled after offending on release. They include Joseph McCann, who was freed in 2019 but went on to commit 37 offences — including the abduction and rape of 11 women and children. Is that really the kind of gamble with public safety that any PM should take? Cavalier Burnham has already shown he has a track record of overpromising then caving in to pressure. He is already rowing back from committing to spending three per cent of GDP on defence. And despite paying lip service to the idea, he still has no serious plans to slash welfare. Endless U-turns ruined Keir Starmer’s premiership and left Britain stuck in the grip of decline. If Burnham can’t make strong decisions and stick to them, he is in for a very bumpy autumn. Team to shine NO ONE can deny Kemi Badenoch has transformed her fortunes as party leader. Now she is setting about building a team around her who can give the Tories a chance at the next election. New Shadow Chancellor Andrew Griffith has more business experience than Labour’s entire Cabinet — and wants to cut taxes. Ex-Army officer Tom Tugendhat, now Shadow Foreign Secretary, knows all about Chinese and Russian aggression. Kemi knows she has to win back the trust of former Conservative voters. Offering proper solutions to fix Britain’s stuttering economy will go a long way towards that. Comment now
