Our country is united in its outrage at the proposed early release of Albert Bowers and Jessie Cole, two of the killers of PC Andrew Harper. PC Harper died in August 2019 when he tried to stop Bowers, Cole and Henry Long when they were stealing a £10,000 quad bike in Berkshire. Andrew’s feet became trapped in the loop of a strap trailing behind a getaway vehicle and he was dragged for a mile in the darkness at “breakneck speed”, dying of his catastrophic injuries. Andrew Harper was 28 years old. He had been married for 28 days. Henry Long, the driver of the car that killed Andrew, received a 16-year sentence and is not eligible for early release. Albert Bowers and Jessie Cole got 13 years in 2020 for manslaughter. Under Labour’s nauseating new rules, even that laughably lenient sentence is set to be cut in half. Police Federation boss Aileen O’Connor wrote in this newspaper that the PM and Justice Secretary Alex Norris should stand before PC Harper’s widow Lissie and his family “and explain why those responsible for killing a police officer should be eligible for early release”. That is what you should be doing today, Mr Burnham — defending a policy that turns the stomach of most British people. Not rubbing in the factor 50 and sucking on your Cornetto. Burnham should be home today bringing in emergency legislation that means killers of emergency workers can never be set free prematurely. The Government tells us there is no room in prison for these gormless ­scumbags. That is a lie. Here is how we create cell space. And there are record numbers of elderly inmates in their 80s and even 90s — nearly 500 incredibly old lags. Are they all a greater danger to ­society than the killers of PC Harper? There are 12 female prisons in England and Wales, most of the inmates serving sentences of six months or less for non-violent crime. Why not repurpose ten female prisons full of non-violent offenders for violent men? Foreign criminals, elderly lags and non-violent female inmates should all be removed from British jails before the release of Albert Bowers and Jessie Cole. These smirking, cocky bastards laughed their way through their trial. They must be laughing still. Enjoy your unearned hols, Andy. But know this — releasing cop killers early is not a good look for a new Prime Minister. Especially a PM who skives off work after two weeks in the job. His approval ratings with the British public are at the highest since his coronation – 68 per cent of Brits believing Charles has done a good job. He has reigned with a deft touch. In June he became the first monarch in our history to reveal his tax bill, contributing £12.9million to the nation’s coffers. This King has turned out to be a diplomat of genius. In our post-Brexit Europe, he has healed wounds, speaking warm words of reconciliation to the politicians of France and Germany. In their own languages! In the volatile United States of Trumpland, Charles handled himself with humour, grace and charm. Much closer to home, he has handled difficult relations like his oldest brother and youngest son with a firm hand. It is in his genius for diplomacy that Charles most resembles his late mother. The Queen met Vladimir Putin, Robert Mugabe, Xi Jinping and Donald Trump – and breezed through every event with great dictators standing meekly by her side. Now it is King Charles III who is this country’s greatest ambassador. Against all the odds, now it is King Charles III who has us asking: How can anyone possibly follow him? WE are told that Gianni Infantino will “not go quietly” from his job as Fifa’s boss. Then I suggest that he goes kicking and screaming. But go Gianni surely must. Nobody has a closer connection to their fans. And she has not let the trauma of Manchester stop her from having a high-flying career, not least her turn in the film Wicked alongside Cynthia Erivo. After a lot of scrutiny about the way she looks, Ariana has decided to step back from her career. Typically, she insists her ten London shows later this month will go ahead before she slips from the spotlight. The world should give her all the space, time and privacy she needs to get happy, healthy and well. This unbelievably courageous young woman has earned it.
