That meant devising original rules to enable combat, negotiation, and exploration in settings with very different technology levels and magic systems. Brotherwise announced during the opening ceremony at Gen Con that it is now using that versatility to power new projects, including one from legendary Dungeons & Dragons designer Keith Baker. Brotherwise is following a trajectory similar to Monte Cook Games, which published the science fantasy TTRPG Numenera in 2013 and then broke out its mechanics in the 2015 Cypher System Rulebook. That success has since led to numerous other Cypher-based games, including Old Gods of Appalachia and The Magnus Archives. Brotherwise will be providing free online rules and templates for designing games using the Plotweaver RPG System, the underlying mechanics of the Cosmere Roleplaying Game. An open alpha begins on Aug. 5, utilizing an original fantasy setting called Erstwild. More settings will be released this fall, with an open beta kicking off next year. Twogether Studios, which is led by Baker and Jenn Ellis, will be creating Infinite, a new genre-hopping TTRPG using the Plotweaver system. Baker, who created D&D’s Eberron setting through a 2002 contest run by Wizards of the Coast, will be judging a Plotweaver Setting Search offering designers the chance to submit ideas for official Brotherwise releases. The contest will kick off in early 2027. Earthborn Games will also be using Plotweaver to make an RPG set in the world of their solarpunk co-operative card game Earthborne Rangers. The setting will be available to pre-order as part of the Plotweaver crowdfunding campaign kicking off in Q2 2027.
