Brother and sister mauled to death by bear as sibling desperately tried to save them after beast pounced in field

Officials say the bear had been prowling around the Largaon Markatola village in India for several days after one of her cubs had recently been found dead nearby. Eldest sister Chamrin and brother Halalkhor were pronounced dead at the scene with the bear spotted still walking around their bodies for some time after the mauling. Youngest sister Khorin Bai, 30, was found with severe injuries and rushed to a hospital in Raipur for urgent treatment. Villagers rushed to the scene after hearing the screams of the surviving sister and started to shout and throw sticks at the bear to try to drive it away. Forest Department staff and police officers worked to scare away the bear to recover the bodies. The mother bear reportedly continued to react aggressively throughout the effort leading to her needing to be tranquilised. Most read in The Sun Kanker police chief Asharam Netam said: “The bear was found standing its ground; it refused to move away. “The injured woman was rushed to Komaldev Hospital, but since her condition was critical and she was referred to Raipur for advanced treatment. “All possible assistance will be provided to the deceased’s family.” The bodies of the victims and the sedated bear were removed from the scene after what officials described as a difficult and drawn out operation. Authorities have told villagers to stay away from the area as a precaution while the situation is brought under control. Former village head Annapurna Thakur said residents warned officials that the bear posed a danger after several sightings following the death of her cub. A local teacher, named as Ranjana, added: “The bear was extremely agitated due to her cub’s death. “The lack of a boundary wall around the school creates a constant threat.” The type of bear hasn’t been confirmed by officials but the primary species that lives in Chhattisgarh is the sloth bear.
