To say that GTA 6’s marketing cycle has been strange would be an understatement. After fans spent literal years begging for just a smidgen of news while Rockstar kept quiet and locked itself away to work on the world’s most anticipated game, things very quickly changed over the past two months. What was once deafening silence, moon theories, and digging through trailers turned into a massive gameplay deep dive, magazine covers, exclusive controllers, a whole soundtrack album, new trailers, and a bunch of artwork. Like with GTA 5, some of that artwork has even appeared in the real world, leaving it open to getting ruined, like what just happened in Brooklyn. GTA 6 Mural In Brooklyn Tagged By Graffiti Artist As pointed out by Redditor BrendalBallentine on the GTA subreddit, Brooklyn’s massive hand-painted mural of the GTA 6 launch trailer artwork has recently been defaced by a graffiti artist called “jelous”, who put their tag at the bottom of the piece. The artist then decided to share what they’d done on their public Instagram page, catching the attention of the GTA community. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the reactions to the defacing have not been positive, with many jumping into jelous’ comments to call him out and even leading him to turn them off altogether. Of course, there are also plenty making fun of the “leave the billion-dollar company alone” vibes that some are giving, but I think I’m mostly with the fans on this one. One fan on Reddit pointed out that tagging a mural advertising a game about crime is almost poetic, but then gets cancelled out by taking a picture and sharing it on social media. While, yes, the mural is marketing at the end of the day, it’s also something that an artist painted by hand for seven days, which is no easy task considering how massive it is. GTA games also don’t exactly come around often, so there’s a bit of reverence for these murals and real-world marketing that makes a frankly uninteresting tag a lame addition. I don’t think Rockstar and Take-Two are going to be rushing down to the mural like some GTA fans are hoping for in the comments, but it is a bit of a shame to see such a nice piece vandalised. At least there’s so much GTA 6 marketing now that you don’t have to go too far to see something else to do with the game.
