Broadview Heights residents will vote on 3-mill property tax renewal in November

Community NewsBroadview Heights City Council -- including, from left, Brian Dunlap, Brian Wolf and Tom Pavlica -- voted earlier this month to place a levy renewal on the November ballot.(Bob Sandrick, special to cleveland.com)By Bob Sandrick, special to cleveland.comBROADVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio – City Council, as expected, has placed a five year, 3-mill levy renewal on the Nov. 3 ballot.The tax, first approved by voters in 1971, costs landowners $11.20 a year for each $100,000 of property value, said city Finance Director David Pfaff.“The levy provides around $420,000 a year, which goes to the general fund for general operating expenses,” Pfaff told cleveland.com in an email.“We annually transfer money out of the general fund to the Street Construction, Maintenance and Repair Fund to provide additional funding for the annual road program,” Pfaff said.Council voted unanimously July 7 to place the renewal levy on the ballot.The renewal levy would not raise taxes for property owners, Pfaff said.According to the ordinance council passed earlier this month, the five-year, 3-mill tax was renewed in 1976, 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2021.In a March 25 memo, Pfaff said the levy expired in 2025, meaning 2026 is the final collection year.Due to inflation, the effective rate of the levy is 0.32 mills.I cover City Halls and school boards in Brecksville, Broadview Heights, North Royalton and Strongsville, specializing in watchdog journalism.
