On the other side of the pond, the sauce is everywhere, paired with fried food like French fries, burgers and wings, as well as sandwiches and salads. But while it can be bought in UK supermarkets, it’s not as readily available, with Hellman’s only launching a ranch range last year. Now though, thanks to the World Cup the sauce is more popular than ever, with Waitrose saying interest in ranch has skyrocketed by 51% over the last few weeks. So if you’re keen to try everyone’s new favourite sauce, but can’t find a bottle in your local supermarket, there’s only one thing left for it: you’ll have to make your own. Here’s a recipe to make your own ranch at home. One popular American sauce is having a moment in the UK (Picture: Getty Images) How to make your own ranch dressing Jack Godik is head chef at Sucre, an Argentinian-inspired open-fire cooking restaurant in Soho. As he tells Metro, making ranch from scratch is super quick and easy, and since it takes less than five minutes to pull together, he reckons there’s actually no point in buying it from a supermarket (unless you’re super pressed for time, or prefer the shop-bought version). He explains: ‘The key is using good-quality mayonnaise, plenty of fresh herbs and balancing the richness with acidity. ‘Don’t skip the fresh herbs — they’re what make ranch taste bright and vibrant. If you want a thinner dressing for salads, simply add another splash of buttermilk. ‘It’s brilliant with crispy chicken, grilled vegetables, wedges or as a dip for crudités.’ It’s usually served with things like fries and sandwiches in the US (Picture: Getty Images) Ingredients 120g good-quality mayonnaise 60g sour cream 1 tbsp whole milk with a squeeze of lemon 1 tsp Dijon mustard 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp onion powder 1 tbsp chopped chives 1 tbsp chopped parsley 1 tsp chopped dill (fresh if possible) 1 tsp lemon juice Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste. Method You’ll want to start off by whisking the mayo, sour cream and buttermilk together until they’re nice and creamy and smooth. Next, stir in the Dijon mustard, garlic, herbs, and lemon juice. Season with a generous serving of salt and black pepper, and then, if you’re not in a rush, chill for 20-30 minutes before serving to give the flavours plenty of time to mingle together. Bon appétit! Restaurants across Europe are banning a dinnertime staple — for good reason If you’ve got a holiday planned in a European country this summer, you might notice a major change when dining out. A new rule is set to come into force from August 2026, which will see a common dinnertime staple banned from all restaurants and bars. Under new European Union regulations, all sachets of ketchup and mayo are set to disappear. And you’ll likely also notice a few other things being replaced, too. According to the EU Regulation 2025/40, single-use plastic packaging for condiments is being banned in the catering sector. This includes single-use plastic packaging for preserves, sauces, coffee creamer, sugar, and seasoning. Instead of single-use plastic, food businesses will be required to replace the sachets and pots with reusable dispensers or containers. Do you have a story you’d like to share?
