A MAJOR British pub chain is closing all 89 restaurants today with thousands of jobs axed. All sites will shutter after dinner service today, giving diners a few more hours to scoff down the chain’s beloved pub grub. The restaurant chain previously released a statement on Facebook announcing the closures, noting that “it has been an honour to serve communities across the UK”. Sign up for the Money newsletter Thank you! Brewers Fayre diners were “gutted” to hear the news, with comments pouring in on social media saying how much the beloved chain will be missed. The closures are part of a major overhaul from parent company Whitbread, which also owns Premier Inn. It announced plans to retire five of its restaurant brands permanently, affecting Brewers Fayre, Beefeater, Bar + Block, Cookhouse + Pub and Table Table chains. This week also sees the closure of all 106 Beefeater restaurants on Thursday, September 10, while the other three chains all shuttered last week. In April, Whitbread boss Dominic Paul confirmed the company was forced into a drastic restructuring “in light of significant cost increases” and would be focusing its efforts on the Premier Inn brand moving forward. The firms set out a five-year survival plan, which will see a number of former Brewers Fayre and Beefeater sites transformed into approximately 600 new hotel rooms. Most read in Money Whitbread also plans to sell £1.5billion of freehold property, helping to fund future growth. Several Beefeater and Brewers Fayre spots have also been snapped up by Wetherspoons, reopening under the iconic pub chain’s brand. A spokesperson for the company previously told The Sun: “As a business which recruits around 15,000 people every year, we expect to be able to retain a significant proportion of those affected and will be looking to redeploy as many of our impacted colleagues as possible.” The company did however confirm that the business changes would see around 3,800 job cuts.
