British energy supplier slashes overnight EV charging to less than 7p an hour in boost for 10,000s of drivers

A BRITISH energy giant has slashed the price of its overnight EV charging to less than 7p per hour. The company will now provide the cheapest off-peak rate of any major supplier, with thousands of drivers set to benefit. Between 12am and 6am, drivers on the Next Drive Smart tariff can now charge their car for 6.9p/KWh, a reduction from the original 8p/KWh rate. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! This now means that the energy company’s customers are paying less than any other major supplier’s tariff. Those on the Next Drive Fixed tariff have also seen a reduction, with the off-peak rate now slashed to 8.5p/KWh. Propositions Director at E.ON Next, Gráinne Regan, said: “As more households switch to electric, we want charging at home to be simple, affordable and something drivers don’t have to think twice about. “Next Drive Smart makes charging an EV one of the cheapest habits a household can have. “We want every driver to see real savings from day one and to make the switch to electric feel like the smart, easy choice it should be.” E.ON’s reduced off-peak rate is just a fraction of the price of its day rate, which charges 31.1p/KWh during the hours of 6am and 12am. Most read in Motors Customers charging their car overnight on the Next Drive Smart scheme will save £462 per year compared to charging on the price cap, as well as £423 when on the fixed rate. Last year, the company reported that over 100,000 customers joined the scheme, hoping to save money by charging at off-peak times. Drivers can now sign up for both the Next Drive Smart and Fixed scheme from today with no exit fee included. Comment now
