A DISCOUNT retailer has slashed the price on all its products as the store prepares for closure this weekend. The store faced economic hardships in recent months as footfall weakened. The discount retailer cited “low footfall and not enough trade” as the reason behind its closure, and launched a 30 per cent off sale on all products. Sign up for the Money newsletter Thank you! Customers weighed in on reasons behind the store’s shuttering, stating it was “too out of the way”, “it should have been in the town centre” and that the “location wasn’t ideal”. Another said: “I am sorry to hear this, I’m always pleased when an independent new shop opens and I salute your courage in having a go.” In fact, several residents commended the shop in attempting to open given the current rate of retail closures, with one adding, “think you were very brave in this climate to even try”. The store will continue the sale until the weekend, and has reassured customers everything would be restocked until all products sell out. PoundPlus, which opened on the site of an old Co-op, specialised in household, kitchen, cleaning and personal care goods, with all products priced from just £1. At the time of opening, councillor Peter Chegwyn commented: “As a local ward councillor and leader of Gosport Council, I wish you every success. Most read in Money “Great to see this empty shop being brought back into use, good luck!” But this is not the first shop to struggle in the Hampshire town, which has been forecast to have the largest population decline of any local authority in England from 2025 to 2035.
