Published May 15, 2026, 7:00 AM EDT James lives and breathes route development. Educated in Air Transport Management at Loughborough University and Cranfield University, James has a PhD in airline strategy. James was Market Opportunity Analyst at London Luton Airport and Chief Analyst at anna.aero. He taught airline strategy and economics to undergraduate and postgraduate students for five years and has worked closely with multiple carriers on route and market intelligence projects. He is based near London, UK. British Airways is the sixth-largest airline in Europe by flights. But due to the strong presence of easyJet, it is the second-largest operator in the UK. It is very different for long-haul activity, with BA inevitably ranking first — and by a strong margin. The oneworld member's full network between January 2025 and May 2026 was analyzed using Cirium data. This was then compared to what is currently scheduled for June 2026 to March 2027. This identifies what has currently changed, including 16 routes that have been eliminated. This excludes services that were only due to operate briefly, such as those from London Gatwick Airport (LGW) and London Heathrow Airport (LHR) to Bilbao for the UEFA Europa League Final. BA Has Ended These Seven Long-Haul Routes Credit: Shutterstock BA has ended six long-haul routes from LHR, while four have been removed from LGW. It has ceased flying from LHR to Jeddah (part of its network until 2020; returned November 2024-April 2026) and Kuwait (served for over six decades). The Saudi city was supposedly removed because of the ongoing instability in the Middle East. That's likely to be only one reason. After all, flights to the much higher-yielding Riyadh will return in the summer, with winter flights increasing to a twice-daily service. Frequency LHR To Jeddah; Local Times* Jeddah To LHR; Local Times** Five weekly 10:30 PM-6:45 AM+1 8:40 AM-1:20 PM * First week in April 2026 ** First week in April 2026 BA has also ended all flights from LGW to Aruba (served March 2023-March 2025), Cape Town (December 2022-January 2025), Las Vegas (served for years until 2020; returned March 2023-October 2025), New York JFK (previously 2008-2009; then 2016-2020; returned May 2022-October 2025), and San Jose, Costa Rica (served until 2020; returned December 2021-March 2026). Except for the Dutch Caribbean destination of Aruba, BA has simply consolidated operations at LHR or switched the route to the UK's busiest airport. Flights to the capital of Costa Rica will operate from LHR for the first time. For the other markets, frequencies have generally increased because of no longer flying from LGW. For the US market, this has contributed to a record 50 daily US services this summer. In October, and so not officially covered in this analysis, it'll also take off from LGW for Tampa for the final time. This was probably driven in part by the insufficient load factor. It'll switch to LHR instead, becoming the first time that the Florida city has had two routes from the UK's busiest airport. A problem is that LHR-Tampa was Virgin Atlantic's worst US route for the number of seats filled. BA Has Ended 11 Short-Haul Routes From London Recall that this article is based on examining BA's international network between January 2025 to May 2026 and comparing that to what's available from June 2026 to March 2027 to see what has changed. BA no longer operates from LHR to Cologne (part of the carrier's network until 2006; returned October 2023-March 2026), Grenoble (served until 2020; returned December 2021-April 2025), Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen (June 2023-October 2025), Izmir (May 2024-September 2025), Kalamata (April 2016-October 2025), Riga (served until 2006; resumed October 2023-March 2026), or Stuttgart. The Greek tourist destination of Kalamata is notable. It is still part of the carrier's network, just served by BA Euroflyer from LGW instead. The pair have juggled some routes in the past to see where they might perform better given each carrier's cost platforms. The lower-cost unit took off to Kalamata on April 30, 2026, with a six-weekly operation. The very varied schedule, shown below, reflects LGW's lack of slots and EuroFlyer's aircraft availability. Day LGW To Kalamata; Local Times* Kalamata To LGW; Local Times** Monday 2:15 PM-8:05 PM 8:55 PM-10:45 PM Tuesday 1:35 PM-7:15 PM 8:05 PM-9:55 PM Wednesday 1:55 PM-7:25 PM 8:15 PM-10:20 PM Thursday 12:30 PM-6:05 PM 6:55 PM-8:55 PM Friday 6:45 AM-12:25 PM 1:15 PM-3:10 PM Saturday 2:50 PM-8:30 PM 9:20 PM-11:15 PM Sunday 6:50 AM-12:40 PM 1:30 PM-3:15 PM * In mid-August 2026 ** In mid-August 2026 The remaining four routes from the UK were also not operated by BA mainline: LGW-Salerno (EuroFlyer; March 2025-October 2025), London City Airport (LCY) to Frankfurt (CityFlyer; for many years until March 2026) and Prague (CityFlyer; returned October 2022-March 2025), and London Stansted Airport (STN) to Amsterdam (CityFlyer; December 2024-April 2025). BA's now-defunct franchisee partner, Sun-Air, ceased Billund-LCY in March 2025. As this was not a BA unit, it was not counted here. One route will now see the type, while another won't. Only One Route Outside London Has Ended Credit: Flickr Nearly all of BA's flights are from London-area airports. However, it does have a tiny network elsewhere, which operate on weekends using CityFlyer's Embraer E190s. The aircraft are freed up from LCY's partial weekend closure and the big drop in business demand on Saturdays and Sundays. CityFlyer flew from Edinburgh to Olbia between May 2024 and September 2025. Using aircraft that arrived in the Scottish capital late on Fridays, flights departed from Edinbrugh at 7:00 AM on Saturdays. The end was influenced by easyJet beginning flights to the Sardinian city in May 2025. Interestingly, Delta Air Lines will begin flying from New York JFK to Olbia next week.
