Britain's best beaches for a coastal walk this autumn - as temperatures remain unseasonably high

Despite the UK officially entering autumn this month, the weather doesn't seem to have caught up.With forecasts sitting around 20C (68F) for the next few days across the country, it's fair to say a day at the beach isn't yet off the cards. Fortunately, Go Outdoors has researched the best beaches in England for an autumnal coastal walk, analysing Google reviews, sunshine hours, water quality and beach award status. Temperatures and autumn rainfall levels were also considered, according to The Argus. Natalie Wolfenden, expert from Go Outdoors, said: 'The UK is home to some stunning beaches that are at their most peaceful during the autumn months.'While the weather is still relatively mild, it's the perfect time to enjoy long coastal walks away from the summer crowds.'Southwold Beach, Suffolk Southwold Beach, in Suffolk, was named the best beach for an autumn walk by Go OutdoorsLocated by the town and pier in Suffolk, Southwold Beach is a mixture of sand and shingle, and is often frequented by families in the summer.Rated 4.7 out of five on Google, the beach sees the joint-highest average daily sunshine hours in the autumn at 5.9, and with the median temperature sitting around 12.5C, it makes the perfect spot for a walk by the sea. One visitor described it as a 'lovely sandy beach where you can walk for miles'. The excellent Blue Flag beach also ranked highly for its water quality classification, achieving the highest overall score of 9.46 out of ten.Porthmeor Beach, Cornwall Porthmeor Beach, in Cornwall, impressed with its Blue Flag Award and excellent water qualityA stroll along the beautiful white sandy shores of Porthmeor Beach in Cornwall certainly won't disappoint. Winner of the Blue Flag Award and Seaside Award in 2024, it is a pristine spot with 5.1 hours of daily sunshine in the autumn, and temperatures of around 13C (55F).The beach is rated 4.8 out of five on Google, and one visitor said: 'Best all round beach in St Ives! Great for swimming, snorkelling, paddleboarding, kayaking and sometimes surfing and body boarding.' It boasts excellent water quality, too, so don't rule out a quick and refreshing dip!Tynemouth Longsands, Tyne and Wear Tynemouth Longsands, in Tyne and Wear, only sees 62mm of rain in the autumnOver in the North East of England, Tynemouth Longsands is a mile-long stretch of golden shoreline. It's another Blue Flag award-winning beach that makes for a lovely autumnal walk, with average temperatures of 10.6C and only 62mm of rain during the season – the lowest of all the beaches on the list.Tynemouth Longsands boasts a Google rating of 4.8, with one beachgoer commenting: 'A great place for walks and relaxation! There’s a long promenade with plenty of stairs for easy access to the beach, as well as walking paths and benches to sit and enjoy the view. 'The beach itself is clean, free from litter and stones, and pleasant to walk on even barefoot. It’s very spacious, with beautiful sea views and sunsets. Perfect for both peaceful walks and more active time outdoors.'West Wittering Beach, West Sussex West Wittering Beach, in West Sussex, has a Blue Flag Award and excellent water qualityWest Wittering Beach offers natural beauty and a clean environment for your next autumnal trek, earning it a score of 8.39 out of ten.It has a Blue Flag Award and excellent water quality, as well as a strong 4.6 rating on Google.'Really amazing beach in the UK. A great place for your family and kids, lots of places to run and play in the sand. Summers are best here,' one visitor said. 'Beach is clean and the facilities are kept tidy too. Plenty of car parking. Make sure you book a slot beforehand for an easy access.'However, it is worth noting that it does have the highest average rainfall for the autumn months on the list at 99.3mm.Blackpool Sands, Devon Blackpool Sands, in south Devon, sees average temperatures of 12.4C in the autumn Blackpool Sands is a privately owned beach in south Devon that is open to the public. With temperatures of around 12.4C and 5.6 hours of sunshine a day, it's a lovely spot for a stroll. Visitors, who have rated it 4.6 out of five on Google, have praised the coastal spot for being 'well sheltered from the wind'.Another said: 'It's a great beach, really great views. It isn't sandy, which might put some people off, but the shingle doesn't get everywhere so I prefer it. Decent facilities, good parking.'Bamburgh Beach, Northumberland Bamburgh Beach, in Northumberland, has an impressive rating on Google of 4.9 out of fiveIn Northumberland, Bamburgh Beach sees a mild 10.3C during autumn, 73mm of rainfall and has excellent water quality.With an impressive 4.9 out of five rating on Google – the highest out of all the beaches on the list – it's a good option for a walk in the autumn sunshine. 'This is one of my favourite beaches! The view of the castle is amazing, and the sand and water are beautiful. It's also lovely for a walk along the beach with great views,' one visitor raved. Bournemouth Beach, Dorset Bournemouth Beach, in Dorset, has beach huts, cafes and a lovely promenadeDorset makes the list with Bournemouth Beach, a sandy stretch of coastline spanning seven miles. It's lined with beach huts, cafes, toilets and has a pleasant promenade to walk along.The beach sees mild temperatures of around 12.7C during the autumn months and has excellent water quality.Holkham Beach, Norfolk Holkham Beach, in Norfolk, is backed by sand dunes and pine woodlandBacked by sand dunes and pine woodland, Holkham Beach in Norfolk is a beautiful spot for a walk.With 5.7 hours of sunshine on average during the autumn and temperatures of around 11.8C, the beach bagged an overall score of 7.15.'What a beautiful beach and a lovely walk through a forest to get there. Sandsend Beach, North Yorkshire Sandsend Beach, in North Yorkshire, sees 5.9 hours of daily sunshine in the autumnSandsend Beach rounds off the best nine spots along England's coast for an autumnal walk with an overall score of 6.99 out of ten. It has excellent water quality, 5.9 hours of daily sunshine and temperatures of around 10.3C.'Huge stretch of parking for this beach, with public toilets close by. Parking is a decent price,' one person said on Google. 'The beach itself is very clean, with loads of space to walk. Stunning views at dawn and dusk.'
