BRITAIN will go bankrupt under Andy Burnham’s leadership because he refuses to say no to colleagues asking for more funds, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch claimed yesterday. She insisted that his first statement to the Commons as PM on Tuesday made his problem clear — despite turmoil on the money markets over his grip on public finances. Sign up for the Politics newsletter Thank you! “If someone doesn’t know how to say no, then they will run out of money. “The problem with socialism is they always run out of other people’s money, not their own.” Meanwhile, senior Labour MP Dame Emily Thornberry said she expected taxes to rise at next month’s Budget. She pointed to “huge strains” on the economy as Chancellor John Healey grapples with inflation, the Iran War and an estimated £14billion blow to finances owing to increases in the Government’s borrowing costs. Economists believe an estimated £14billion has been wiped away from the Government’s financial cushion due to the hikes in borrowing costs. Lord O’Neill, an ally of the PM, says the bond markets would welcome the Government tackling the “sacred cows” such as the triple lock or welfare costs to get on top of the public finances.
