The men reportedly attacked the 38-year-old in the Laganas area of Zante on Tuesday morning. Greek police have launched an urgent probe into the allegations Credit: Getty The men reportedly attacked the 38-year-old in the Laganas area of Zante Credit: Getty Two suspects, aged 19 and 28, have been arrested and taken to the Prosecutors office. It comes just weeks after two British teens were allegedly raped by a tourism worker on the same island off the western coast of mainland Greece. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! The alleged victims, both aged 18, told local police they met the man while enjoying a holiday together. Both women said they were later raped by the same man, according to local media outlet Ethnos. Cops launched an urgent probe after the pair were taken to hospital to undergo medical examination. Authorities also informed the victims’ families of the incident. Allegations of sexual abuse rocked Zante earlier this month after eight rapes were reported in 20 days. Most of the attacks are reportedly linked to the popular area of Laganas. Most read in The Sun Michalis Giannakos, president of public healthcare workers’ union POEDIN, said that eight female tourists sought medical attention, reporting that they had been raped. He said: “It is abhorrent and humiliating what is happening to the women, with individuals taking advantage of the state of intoxication in which they may be.” But police said just three cases of rape had been reported by tourists in the same time period. Michalis told local media that police were informed after the women were looked at by medical professionals. But no cases were brought as the victims made no formal complaints and would not reveal their attackers’ identity, he added. Police said in response: “We are dedicated to investigating every report, protecting victims and reliably informing public opinion, solely based on official and confirmed data.” Greece has seen a marked increase in the amount of sexual violence in the last 14 years. Police recorded 1,250 offences in 2024, compared to just 511 in 2010, according to Eurostat data. Sexual violence is not the only dark cloud hanging over this sun-drenched party island. For decades, reports of drink-spiking have emerged in Zante – with some tourists left dangerously ill, and in some cases blind, after consuming drinks contaminated with toxic methanol. Comment now
