Brit, 43, fighting for life in coma after mum finds him ‘covered in blood’ in hotel room on holiday in Lanzarote

A BRIT man is fighting for his life after his mum found him “covered in blood” in a hotel room in Lanzarote. Paul’s mum, who was sharing a twin room with Paul, woke to find her son covered in blood. The waiter was having a seizure and had smashed his head against the wall behind him. Emergency services scrambled to the scene and rushed Paul to hospital where medics told the family his kidney and liver were shutting down. The hospital did not have the right equipment to handle the brain injury so the Brit was airlifted to University Hospital of Gran Canaria Dr Negrín in Gran Canaria for intensive care. Hours later, the family received a call telling them that Paul needed emergency surgery. The horrifying brain injury had forced medics to remove half of his skull. They rang for permission and did it then and there”, his heartbroken sister recalled. Paul had surgery the same day, with surgeons removing the right side of his skull to save his life. Still sedated and not out of the ‘danger zone’ yet, Paul’s family says they’ve spent more than £1,500 on flights and accommodation costs to be at his bedside. His sister Kimberley Sharp said: “He just wanted to make some nice family memories and have a good time. “It was all-inclusive for a week in Lanzarote. We had a good first day, hung out by the pool and had a bit of dinner. “I woke up to my mum banging on my door at 5am because Paul had a seizure and had fallen and banged his head in the hotel room. “He was covered in blood, it was in the hallway, we think he banged it on the wall. “My mum did everything she could. She woke up to the noises he was making, she tried to put him on his side so he didn’t swallow his tongue. “He was bleeding from his head and his nose and still having a fit. Kimberley, a kitchen manager, revealed that her brother suffered his first seizure a couple of months ago after being mugged in Newcastle. She said: “He was jumped for his wallet and his phone, he was put into hospital and hasn’t been the same since. “That’s why this family holiday was so important to him.” Paul’s surgery went through with no complications – but the waiter is still in a coma and his sister confessed that she does not know if he had insurance. She added that “half his skull was removed on his right-hand side”. “He’s not quite out of the danger zone yet, a part of his brain is severely damaged.” She has set up a GoFundMe to support herself and her mother staying in Gran Canaria to take care of Paul and bring him home to the UK.
