He was really excited to go.” Cameron, from Exeter, was on a rented boat with close pal Steve Pittman near the small island of Marathonisi on Tuesday when he decided to jump into the water at around 3pm. Minutes later, a man on another vessel spotted Cameron “lying face-down” in the sea and shouted to Steve: “Is your friend OK?” In shock, Steve called for help as they desperately pulled Cameron from the water and performed emergency CPR. A source said the former electrical engineer was initially breathing but then stopped responding a few minutes later. A Coast Guard patrol boat arrived and rushed Cameron towards an ambulance which took him to Zakynthos General Hospital. Forensic exams are still ongoing to establish an official cause of death. All of Cameron’s loved ones are now desperately waiting to hear more information on his tragic death. Silvana added: “It was a complete accident. We don’t know if it was a heart attack or too much water in his lungs.” Silvana was told the tragic news in a heartbreaking phone call with Steve early on Wednesday morning. She recalled: “When I first found out I just didn’t want to believe it. “His friend called early Wednesday morning and said, ‘I’m really sorry, I don’t know how to say this but something really bad has happened, Cameron’s died.’ “It was really horrible.” The couple had started to plan their marriage before the tragedy Credit: Supplied Silvana said Cameron had been due to return home this weekend Credit: Supplied Devastated Steve has been left feeling guilty over Cameron’s sudden death – but Silvana says she has been doing all she can to assure him he isn’t to blame. She continued: “There’s nothing he could have done. Everyone tried their best to help him but it’s just one of those situations.” Cameron had recently lost his job after running his own business as an electrical engineer for ten years. The trip had been meant to give him a chance to escape his worries and have some fun with Steve. Silvana said: “He just needed something to take his mind off all this and unfortunately it didn’t end as we wanted.” The couple had lived together throughout their 11-year relationship and had only just begun planning their future as husband and wife. She added: “We had just got engaged and we were planning our wedding. It’s just heartbreaking. We lived together.” Cameron had been due to return home this weekend. A Foreign Office spokesperson told The Sun: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities”. Comment now
