Brewers Designate Lyon Richardson For Assignment

The Brewers announced that right-hander Bryse Wilson has been reinstated from the 15-day injured list. Fellow righty Lyon Richardson has been designated for assignment as the corresponding move. On the position player side, Andrew Vaughn has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to illness, retroactive to September 22. Outfielder Brandon Lockridge was recalled to replace Vaughn, who will be eligible for reinstatement prior to the NLDS. The Brewers have a secured a bye through the Wild Card round. Since the Brewers have already clinched the top record in the majors, their priority now is keeping their players healthy for October. They called up Colton Gordon from the minors to make a start on Tuesday, giving their other arms some extra rest. Gordon was going to be unavailable for a few days after that, so he was optioned and Richardson was called up to add a fresh arm. Richardson didn’t pitch in the past two days but the Brewers evidently feel they don’t need him for the final contests of the regular season. Since he is out of options, he has been bumped off to make room for Wilson. Since the trade deadline is long gone, Richardson will have to be placed on waivers. He has cleared multiple times this year and will probably do so again. If he does, he will have the right to elect free agency, because of those previous outrights. He might accept and wait around for the off-chance that a number of Brewers get injured in the postseason and his arm is needed. Richardson has a 6.48 earned run average in 58 1/3 career innings.
