The Mummy franchise grew from classic monster films into the beloved Brendan Fraser trilogy, which shifted the classic story into a major action-adventure enjoyed worldwide. Fraser's trilogy began in 1999 with the release of The Mummy, followed by its sequel The Mummy Returns, released in 2001, and then the extremely divisive third movie installment, 2008's The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. The franchise continues to grow with spinoffs and horror remakes, but now the classic story is set to return. New set photos finally unveil the long-awaited reunion between The Mummy franchise stars Rachel Weisz and Fraser as production continues for The Mummy 4. The next installment in Fraser's Mummy franchise is currently untitled and is directed by the filmmaking duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, otherwise known as Radio Silence. The new set photos show Fraser and Weisz upbeat on set in their respective roles as adventurer Rick O'Connell and Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan. This reunion has been 25 years in the making after Weisz didn't appear in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor to reprise her role as Evelyn. The role was recast with Maria Bello stepping in, leaving many of the fanbase devastated by the disappointing departure. Luckily, Weisz is indeed returning for The Mummy 4 alongside Fraser, John Hannah, and reportedly Arnold Vosloo, with new cast members such as Obsession's Michael Johnston. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Empire was often dismissed from the original two movies, directed by Stephen Sommers, since it had a new director, Rob Cohen, and Weisz did not return. It wasn't only some missing pieces making an impact; the critical reception was nothing short of abysmal. Critics gave the movie a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 13%, with reviews stating, "The only thing that really saves the film from being a complete debacle is Brendan Fraser's uncanny ability to sell even the dumbest scene," and "Tomb of the Dragon Emperor isn't nearly up to the mark set by the previous modern Mummy movies." Universal Pictures has slated The Mummy 4 to arrive in theaters on October 15, 2027, and will act as a direct sequel to The Mummy Returns. With The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor not canon, it will be interesting for all to see the new adventures awaiting Rick and Evelyn.
