Breeze Airways Abruptly Cancels 2nd Longest International Route: Here's Why

On some days, the airline will have no such activity at all. Only one in every 192 takeoffs will be international. Each week, airlines from around the world submit schedule changes to Cirium Diio, OAG, and other platforms. The updates could encompass many things, including new routes, markets that have been eliminated, equipment changes, longer or shorter operating periods, different frequencies, and so on. In the latest submission, Breeze has confirmed that it'll end its second-longest international route. Breeze Has Pulled All Flights From Providence To Cancun In September 2025, Breeze announced that it'd fly from Providence's Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport (PVD) to the ever-popular Mexican tourist destination of Cancun International Airport (CUN). The inaugural flight took place in February 2026, with a Saturday-only service through April 2026. According to the US Department of Transportation (DOT), Breeze only transported 1,364 round-trip passengers on this route. Of the passengers who flew from PVD, Breeze captured less than 11% of the market, with the majority still preferring to fly indirectly for loyalty points, higher frequencies, and so on. Many others were leaked to Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) for nonstop flights. The DOT indicates that Breeze's load factor was an extremely low 49.8%. Fewer than half of the seats were filled. PVD-CUN flights were last available with Frontier Airlines amid the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022. That carrier's result was nearly identical: 50.2%. No wonder neither airline lasted long on the airport pair. Breeze's schedule submission to Cirium shows that the plan was for this route to resume on December 19, 2026, in time for the Christmas getaway, and operate through March 20, 2027. A Saturday and Wednesday service was planned for December, but this was to then fall back to the original Saturday operation. The latest information shows that all flights have been removed and are no longer bookable. Only flights between John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) and Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) would have covered more distance, with this route beginning in January 2027. The second spot will now be taken by Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) to PUJ, which will launch in the same month. Between August 2026 and March 2027, Breeze plans 13 international routes. It'll fly from Charleston, New Orleans, Norfolk, PIT, Richmond, and Tampa International Airport (TPA) to CUN, from CMH, PIT, Raleigh/Durham, and TPA to PUJ, and from TPA to Montego Bay, Nassau, and San José (Costa Rica). Only the tiny Cabo Verde Airlines will now operate. Having returned to PVD earlier this year, the little-discussed African carrier will fly nonstop to both Praia (on Tuesdays) and Sal (on Fridays). The Friday operation will continue to Praia. Rhode Island and Massachusetts have a considerable number of Cape Verdean Americans, which is why the carrier flies to PVD. The distance of the two links is 2,901 nautical miles (5,374 km) to 2,949 nautical miles (5,462 km) each way. Due to the relatively short transatlantic flights, Cabo Verde Airlines operates during the day back to Africa. On Tuesdays and Fridays, the operating Boeing 737 MAX 8 will usually leave PVD at 2:30 PM and get back at 1:30 AM+1.
