Braves, Eric Haase Agree To Minor League Deal

The Braves signed catcher Eric Haase to a minor league deal last week, according to the MLB.com transaction tracker. He’s been assigned to their Florida complex. The log indicates that the deal was actually finalized on September 1. Assuming that was submitted to the league office by noon, Haase would be eligible for Atlanta’s postseason roster. It’d likely require an injury for the Braves to consider that, as Drake Baldwin and Sean Murphy will be the catching duo in October. Kyle Farmer is on the MLB roster as a depth infielder/emergency third catcher. Farmer hasn’t caught in a big league game in seven years but made five appearances behind the dish in Double-A this season. Haase is now in his third organization of the season. He opened this year on a minor league contract with the Giants. Haase cracked San Francisco’s big league roster in April and was on the team for a few months. He tallied 84 plate appearances and hit .162/.235/.365 with four home runs. Haase struck out in a third of his trips. The Giants released him shortly after the All-Star Break. He spent a couple weeks in Triple-A on a minor league deal with the White Sox but was granted his release in the middle of August. Haase hit for some power in that limited look and has a 22-homer campaign in the big leagues (2021, with Detroit). He’s a below-average receiving catcher who strikes out a lot, so it’s a limited overall profile. Baldwin and Murphy are Atlanta’s only catchers on the 40-man roster. Chuckie Robinson and Maverick Handley are the healthy backstops in a non-roster role with Triple-A Gwinnett. Jair Camargo and Sandy León are also in the organization but currently injured, with León on the 60-day injured list and almost certainly done for the season. View Comments (0)
