Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn Meets Final Fantasy In New Turn-Based Fantasy RPG

With extensive experience playing video games, he covers all forms of gaming content at Screen Rant, from breaking news to the latest fan theories. Most-played games range from Clair Obscur to Civ to Elden Ring to Halo 2 and beyond. Brandon Sanderson fans have been waiting for years for an official video game adaptation of his beloved Cosmere universe, and while he's recently teased a new project being shopped around at AAA studios, the unfortunate cancellation of his 2012 action RPG, Mistborn: Birthright, is a grim reminder of how quickly these things can fall apart. While fans have been loving the official Cosmere tabletop RPG from Brotherwise Games and are getting a trove of new content from across both the Mistborn and Stormlight branches of the Cosmere universe, a proper video game RPG is still among the most requested projects in fantasy to date. That said, there's one promising new project that's currently in Early Access on Steam that has Brandon Sanderson written all over it, and it features Final Fantasy-style turn-based combat and will be of interest to Octopath Traveler enthusiasts as well. If you fall into any of these categories, you'll want to check out The Severed Gods ASAP on Steam. Looking For A Game With Brandon Sanderson Vibes? The Severed Gods is a newly launched Early Access fantasy RPG from Vietnamese developer Topebox that features turn-based tactical combat with roguelite progression systems. It's clearly inspired by the early Final Fantasy installments and/or Octopath in terms of pixel-style turn-based RPGs with open world exploration. While its party-based battles and art style will feel immediately familiar to Final Fantasy fans, the game adds an unusual vertical targeting system as well to shake things up and keep it original. Enemies have low, middle, and high body parts with separate defenses, allowing players to break shields, sever limbs, and permanently disable certain attacks depending on where you strike. Meanwhile, the setting and mechanics have plenty to appeal to Brandon Sanderson fans as well. Heroes possess distinctive supernatural "Marks," and abilities can be inherited or reshaped through relics. Further, there's a unique "morality-based Karma" system that can reward Virtue or unlock forbidden powers through Sin, very reminiscent of the magic systems and consequential choices found throughout the Cosmere. The Severed Gods Is Available Now The Severed Gods is currenty available to play right now in an Early Access build, which includes five heroes, three worlds, more than 100 skills, and 80-plus relics, with Topebox expecting development to continue for another one to two years. Topebox has unveiled a Year One Roadmap development schedule and content plan, with multiple quality-of-life improvements, new classes, unique features, and more planned. While it may still be rough around the edges and isn't exactly an outright Cosmere video game adaptation, The Severed Gods is well worth the price of admission during its current Early Access run. So far, several player reviews have given extremely positive feedback, and aside from the expected hiccups from an Early Access title, the game seems to be highly recommended among those who've tried it since its launch earlier this month on Steam.
