It was announced in January that Sanderson, a fantasy author behind such titles as The Wheel of Time, had signed a deal with Apple TV for the rights to his Cosmere universe of books. As part of the deal, the Mistborn novels are being made into a movie for the streamer. Providing an update on his self-titled YouTube channel recently, Sanderson confirmed that he will begin work on the pilot episode of The Stormlight Archive once he finishes the screenplay for the Mistborn movie, which he says is roughly 72% complete. In the quote below, Sanderson also clarifies that a team of writers will be working on Stormlight. But, he adds, he'd like to write most of it himself: “Once I finish the Mistborn screenplay, my next project will be getting a pilot for Stormlight and then trying to get the whole season worked through.” “I'm not going to write it all myself, though. So if you're like, ‘Brandon, how long will that take?’ I am going to have some writing partners. But I'm going to write a big, decent chunk of it myself, because I would like to.” Just like Mistborn, The Stormlight Archive is also part of the Cosmere universe. It was first published in August 2010, with The Way of Kings, and the first novel focuses on a world with magically powered storms, knights, and monsters that are known as the Voidbringers. On the whole, the Cosmere universe takes place in different eras. It is premised on Adolnasium, who is killed. In the aftermath of Adolnasium's death, the being's power is broken into 16 shards and spread throughout many worlds. This spreads all sorts of different magic across the universe. The Stormlight Archive consists of five novels and two novellas so far. It has already been adapted as a virtual reality game and a tabletop game, but the challenge of bringing Stormlight's complex story to the screen will be a new one. Apple TV's adaptations of Mistborn and Stormlight are both in their early stages, with something as essential as casting still a long way from factoring into the conversation. Apple TV won what was reported as a competitive situation, with Sanderson said to have met with most studios about the rights to adapt his work. He'll have a major say in how all of his books are brought to life, writing, producing, and consulting, in addition to having approval rights. This will make The Stormlight Archive, with its author collectively selling 50 million copies worldwide, an exciting project to watch as it moves along in the developmental process. It also gives Apple TV a major fantasy franchise, allowing it to compete directly with the likes of HBO and Disney in terms of fantasy series.
