Brand New Day Redefines The MCU’s Spider-Man (And It’s What I’ve Always Wanted)

This post contains SPOILERS for Spider-Man: Brand New Day Spider-Man: Brand New Day has redefined the MCU's Peter Parker in ways I've always wanted to see for over a decade. Brand New Day is already breaking all sorts of box office records as the fourth chapter for Tom Holland's Wallcrawler, proving the large consensus that it's one of the best live-action Spider-Man movies of all time. Keeping that in mind, I firmly believe the biggest accomplishment it pulls off is finally giving Peter Parker the perfect kind of balance I've been dying for in the MCU. In the MCU, Tom Holland's Peter Parker debuted as Iron Man's new protégé in Captain America: Civil War, joining his side against Steve Rogers before establishing himself as a hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming with Stark as his mentor. He then became an official Avenger in Infinity War and Endgame. Following Iron Man's death, the MCU saw Spider-Man working alongside the likes of Nick Fury and Doctor Strange in Far From Home and No Way Home, while also joining forces with both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Men from other realities, a massive multiversal team-up. Every entry thus far in Spider-Man's MCU journey has been exciting and progressed his character in very dynamic ways. However, Spider-Man: Brand New Day feels very special in that the MCU's Spider-Man is finally given the opportunity to actually be the Spider-Man we see on the page for the last 65 years (in the best way possible). ​​​​​ MCU Spider-Man Has Finally Evolved With A Peak Comic-Accurate Status Quo In the wake of the spell that prevented a major multiversal crisis in No Way Home, no one remembers who Peter Parker is, not even his loved ones like MJ and Ned. As a result, Brand New Day establishes right off the bat that Spider-Man has taken absolute precedence in the Webslinger's life, while his life as Peter Parker has taken a major back seat. As such, the result is a major struggle between the respective halves that make up one of Marvel's most iconic heroes, mirroring the original comics. Likewise, Peter has finally cemented himself as one of New York's most beloved heroes, with Spider-Man taking on major organized crime like The Big Man or the Manfredi gang, while also putting away several superpowered villains like Scorpion, Tombstone, Boomerang, Tarantula, and more, all with the help of his key NYPD ally from the comics, Detective Jean DeWolff. The final spell makes every person in every universe forget that Peter Parker exists. MJ, Ned, Happy, the Avengers — everyone. Peter visits MJ at the coffee shop afterward but decides not to re-introduce himself, choosing to protect them. He starts over completely alone, sewing his own suit in a small apartment. ✗ Web miss! The answer is that everyone forgets who Peter Parker is. The spell doesn’t erase Spider-Man — people still know the hero exists — but nobody remembers Peter Parker the person. This devastating sacrifice means MJ, Ned, and even Happy Hogan have no memory of him at all. REVEAL MY SCORE → Assessment Complete Your Spider-Sense Rating / 8 Are you an Avenger — or just a friendly neighborhood bystander? ↻ SWING AGAIN Rather than taking on world-ending cosmic threats or multiversal crises, Spider-Man doesn't leave New York in Brand New Day, and while the stakes do rise on a personal level, they remain fairly grounded overall. At the same time, Spider-Man hasn't been siloed off in Brand New Day either. He's still a key part of the greater MCU, as proven by his interactions with major characters like Yelena Belova's Black Widow and Bruce Banner's Hulk. Although Spider-Man's been involved in major Avengers-level threats in the past, which Yelena calls "big potato brain stuff," she compares his current status quo and efforts in New York as "small baby potato stuff." However, the fact that Spider-Man can comfortably exist in both worlds (and handle all kinds of potatoes) is easily his biggest strength as a Marvel hero. Spider-Man: Brand New Day proves this more than any movie before, and it's incredibly authentic to the comics. Spider-Man Is Now The Perfect MCU "Bridge" Hero (His Biggest Advantage) More than any other Marvel hero, Spider-Man can be a natural fit for almost every type of story the MCU has to offer. It's something the comics have understood for decades, with the MCU finally capturing that impressive versatility as well with Brand New Day. Honestly, there's no better example than the simple fact that this movie sees Spider-Man clashing with and working alongside Frank Castle's Punisher in one scene, only for the Webslinger to take on the return of Bruce Banner's Savage Hulk the next. Case in point: there's a hilarious moment in Brand New Day where Frank arrives to help Spider-Man, only to realize just how out of his depth he is facing the Hulk (he even tries to get out of fighting Banner). Peter doesn't. He takes the Hulk head-on, trying to help Banner regain control. On the page, Spider-Man has always been extremely adaptable for so many different kinds of stories. As such, it's nice to see the MCU highlighting that fact by giving Tom Holland's Peter Parker a story that's more grounded and street-level compared to his past appearances, while still balancing the inclusion of bigger characters and threats. Those past movies were amazing, though they arguably only represented half of the appeal in my mind. Now, we have a movie that truly depicts Spider-Man as the true "bridge" hero in the MCU he's always been in the comics, capable of being in both street-level stories and world-ending events while still feeling tonally consistent. Although past MCU Spider-Man very much leaned into the bigger high-stakes stuff, Brand New Day brings in the other side with a more grounded story with personal stakes, working with Punisher and fighting The Hand...while also dealing with the Hulk and incredibly powerful mutants like Sadie Sink's Jean Grey all at the same time. It truly is perfect, and the exact kind of MCU portrayal that I and no doubt several Spider-Man fans have always wanted. Marvel And Sony's Biggest Responsibility Going Forward? Balance Credit: MovieStillsDB During Spider-Man: Brand New Day's ending, the memory of Aunt May reminds both Peter and Jean Grey that their "biggest responsibility" is to remember that they're loved and special not because of their power, but because of who they are. Similarly, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have a bigger responsibility too, beyond simply making more Spider-Man movies. Now that they've finally achieved the perfect balance for MCU Spider-Man, they now have to maintain and protect it. Should Spider-Man appear in one or both of the upcoming Avengers movies with their massive multiversal stakes? Absolutely. He's more than earned his place as one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Just so long as he continues to be given stories that are more grounded and less tied to world-ending events as well. It's a balance Marvel Comics has maintained for years, and Brand New Day proves Marvel Studios and Sony are capable of doing the same (with great success). By all accounts, it's incredibly satisfying to finally see the MCU embracing Spider-Man and everything he is in full.
