Bradley Johnson confirms desired Emmerdale ending as he leaves Vinny role

Bradley just wants a happy ending for Vinny (Picture: Mark Bruce/ITV) ‘I just want Vinny to have a happy ending,’ says Bradley Johnson on his hopes for his alter-ego, before he ultimately departs Emmerdale. It was reported earlier this year that Emmerdale bosses had decided to lose Vinny from the show, with the character becoming another casualty of ITV’s budget cuts, and in recent weeks, it’s becoming quite likely that his exit will come as a result of his role in the apocalyptic crash that claimed the lives of Dawn Taylor (Olivia Bromley) and Jimmy King (Nick Miles). Bradley had been driving back to the village when his ex-wife, Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham), rang him for a whinge; when Jimmy swerved to avoid him, he ended up crashing into Dawn and Joe Tate’s (Ned Porteous) wedding marquee, unleashing utter carnage. While Kev Barton (Chris Coghill) has pleaded with him to keep quiet for the benefit of his son and Vinny’s boyfriend, Lewis Barton (Bradley Riches), Vinny simply can’t bare the guilt, and confesses to both Joe and Jimmy’s wife, Nicola King (Nicola Wheeler). ‘Each day he is not telling someone, it is getting more and more,’ Bradley explains. ‘We see him um’ing and ah’ing, we’ve seen him confide in Kev and Kev’s saying ‘don’t tell anyone’ ‘keeping this to yourself’, ‘you’ll upset Lewis’, but we ultimately see Vinnie confess to Nicola.’ Vinny confesses all to Nicola… (Picture: Mark Bruce/ITV) …then to Joe (Picture: Mark Bruce/ITV) On the aftermath of Vinny’s confession, Bradley says: ‘In his head, he’s done the right thing. Then we see Joe being Joe: he goes ‘I want to smash his face in. But ultimately I don’t want to be the one to blame’. ‘So he riles Billy [Fletcher (Jay Kontzle)] up and tells Billy and ultimately we see Billy beat Vinny up. He’s had his fair share of being beaten up, It’s awful, he’s massively guilt ridden. But ultimately he’s doing the right thing.’ Why admit to the grieving partners of the deceased, though? Why not go to the police? According to Bradley, Vinny hopes they’ll leave the police out of it and take their revenge with their fists. He’s got the Dingles, he’s got his mum. He’s got Lewis, he loves it there. Over the years we’ve seen how much the village means to Vinny. ‘In an ideal world, he’d like to confess and get beaten up or whatever, they can say to Vinny what they think about him, but maybe forgiveness? We don’t have to involve the police, and he can stay there and he can live happily ever after.’ Vinny answering the phone to Gabby caused the crash (Picture: Mark Bruce/ITV) According to Bradley, a happy ending is all he wants for his alter-ego. ‘He’s been through so much turmoil and so much bad stuff in the village, he deserves his happy ever after with Lewis – I would love for them just to be happy and in love and get married and have the dream wedding and live that happy life. ‘Vinny has definitely found the one in Lewis and I think they’ve helped each other through situations and the things they’ve been through; Vinny helps Lewis and Lewis helps Vinny massively. I’ve really, really enjoyed working with Brad the actor and seeing their relationship blossom on screen. I think it’s been really really nice, for where it started to where they are.’ Bradley had one word to describe the twist in Vinny’s story: ‘Heartbreaking’. Bradley wants to see Lewis and Vinny be happy (Picture: ITV/Mark Bruce/Shutterstock) ‘He’s not a bad person, he’s not a criminal, he’s got all the right intentions,’ he went on to explain. ‘He’s feeling guilty, he’s feeling regretful and thinking ‘why did I pick up my phone?’ in that instance and do something so stupid?’ He cares so much about the village and its people.’ The upside, though? Working with Chris Coghill and Bradley Riches. ‘Bradley and Chris are amazing,’ he enthused. ‘Chris Coghill is an amazing actor, and I’ve loved working with him. He can make me laugh in an instant. ‘When we got on set, he will change things from take to take – I actually got sent off set for laughing too much at Chris!
