Other Mommy and The Social Reckoning are repeating history at the domestic box office. 2026's Other Mommy, which is an adaptation of the Josh Malerman novel Incidents Around the House, is a Blumhouse-Atomic Monster production starring Jessica Chastain in a dual role as a loving mother and a creepy doppelgänger entity trying to take her place. It debuted in domestic theaters on October 9, the same day as The Social Reckoning, which is the sequel to the Oscar-winning 2010 hit The Social Network, following Mark Zuckerberg (Jeremy Strong) squaring off against Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison). Original screenwriter Aaron Sorkin both writes and directs. REVEAL MY SCORE → The Body Count Your Survival Score 💀 / 8 Did you survive the horror quiz? ↻ SURVIVE AGAIN Per The Numbers, as of Sunday morning, Other Mommy is projected to earn a 3-day total of $27.5 million at the domestic box office by the end of its debut weekend, premiering at No. 1. Meanwhile, The Social Reckoning is turning out a disappointing $5.5 million (per Sony Pictures Entertainment), which should see it debut at No. 5. While it could still be on track to turn a small profit by the end of its run, this is less than a third of what The Social Network earned during its $22.4 million debut, not adjusted for inflation. This follows the exact pattern established during the first weekend of October, which saw the female-led genre adaptation Verity (which was based on the Colleen Hoover thriller novel of the same name and starred Dakota Johnson and Anne Hathaway opposite Josh Hartnett) take No. 1 over the big-budget Oscar play Digger, which starred Tom Cruise and was directed by four-time Oscar winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu. 2026's Digger hit No. 5 with an $8 million debut that puts it on track to lose more than $150 million and become one of the biggest bombs of all time. Below, see the full domestic Top 5 chart for this weekend (per Sony Pictures Entertainment, The Numbers, and Variety): # Title 3-Day Total Cumulative (Domestic) 1 Other Mommy $27.5 million $27.5 million (weekend 1) 2 Verity $11.4 million $53 million (weekend 2) 3 Resident Evil $8.3 million $138.5 million (weekend 4) 4 Heart of the Beast $7.1 million $49.7 million (weekend 3) 5 The Social Reckoning $5.5 million $5.5 million (weekend 1) The previous weekend's Top 3 titles are falling one spot apiece this weekend, slotting in neatly behind Other Mommy with Verity falling to No. 2 with a brutal sophomore drop of 64% (the worst for a Hoover adaptation, ahead of Reminders of Him's 55.5%), pushing Zach Cregger's Resident Evil to No. 3 in its fourth weekend and the Brad Pitt survival movie Heart of the Beast to No. 4 in its third. Both holdover titles are expected to post narrow drops of less than 40%. With two new titles debuting in the Top 5, a pair of other titles were ousted from the chart. Those would be Digger (which is expected to fall to No. 7 in its sophomore weekend behind DreamWorks' Forgotten Island, which had a lukewarm debut but has been posting solid week-on-week holds) and Robert Pattinson's To Catch a Predator movie Primetime (which is falling from No. 4 to No. 9 during its third weekend behind Digger and Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which is getting a boost because it returned to IMAX screens this weekend). Other Mommy and The Social Reckoning have so far continued a trend of genre releases that tie in better with the Halloween season triumphing over more awards season-oriented endeavors. Next weekend will test that trend, as - in addition to the arrival of the action movie Street Fighter - two genre releases (the Austin Abrams survival thriller Whalefall and the spider horror movie Crawlers) will be facing off against the new Jane Austen adaptation Sense and Sensibility.
