Bosnia’s Elections Offer New Technologies, But Old Politics

The campaign ahead of Bosnia’s October 4 elections started with a bang – literally, as a Serbian army honour guard fired a three-volley salute at the funeral of the Bosnian Serb wartime commander and convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic. Most Bosnian Serb politicians, ruling and opposition alike, used the occasion of Mladic’s September 7 funeral in Belgrade to display their nationalist sentiments and glorify the man convicted by a UN tribunal of war crimes and genocide during Bosnia’s 1992-5 war. Bosniak and Bosnian Croat politicians responded in kind, pledging to protect their ethnic kin and reiterating accusations that Serbs were a “genocidal people”, even though only individuals, not entire ethnic groups, can be held responsible for that.
