Bombshell dropped by Celebrity Traitors star Myha’la has completely shaken the game

She appears to have fallen victim to one of the major issues with Celebrity Traitors: being too good at your day job. Having played conniving Harper Stern on the BBC show with such alacrity, the 30-year-old went into Ardross Castle aware she was going to have to distance herself from the plotting and scheming that has defined her character. Myha’la has spoken about purposefully dressing in clothes Harper wouldn’t be caught dead in, which amounted to a lot of cardigans. But we’ll never see what else she had up her sleeve, after she became the second star to be banished at the roundtable. It’s not clear whether the crafty dressing worked. Her role as Harper wasn’t pointed to as part of the Traitorous logic, but Julie Hesmondhalgh made a point of saying she had just binged Industry and adored her performance, before telling everyone Myha’la was her number one suspect. It wasn’t subtle. But the slates were nearly as unanimous as they had been for Richard E Grant earlier in the episode. We almost managed to get a clean sweep of correct spellings, except for Jerry Hall who fudged her name completely. But I think Myha’la’s shock early departure could, inadvertently, have more of an impact than anticipated, because of her tasty parting shot for the Faithful. ‘I don’t think the Traitors are as dumb or silly or confused as you think they are. I think they’re a lot smarter,’ she told the roundtable, before revealing her loyal identity and heading back to the Inverness Marriott hotel. Even if Myha’la doesn’t know who the Traitors are and probably overstated their prowess so far, her final words on the matter clearly implicate one player: professional boffin Hannah Fry. So far, Hannah has been as bad a Traitor as she told Claudia Winkleman she would be. Her ‘prefect energy’ doesn’t mesh well with the sole objective of needing to lie about everything. Hannah entered breakfast looking like she’d just seen a ghost in the corridor (perhaps the effect of the drive over with Jerry). Self-styled Miss Marple Miranda Hart was among those immediately on to her. Hannah Fry has now replaced Myha’la as the player with their back against the wall (Picture: BBC) Then she spent the roundtable shiftily recounting the tug of war for a shield during the mission, with a reluctance to divulge what exactly happened has already been interpreted as Traitor-ish behaviour. Another wrong-footed move from Hannah. As was getting in a back-and-forth with Myha’la that left the latter a bit weepy, which looked doubly bad once her Faithful status was revealed. Myha’la’s final words at the roundtable put me in mind of season one of the ‘civilian’ edition of the show, when an epic Traitor-on-Traitor betrayal saw Kieran Tompsett give Wilf Webster a ‘parting gift’, pointedly writing his name when nobody suspected him whatsoever. Like Kieran, Myha’la clearly saw the power in those final moments to channel attention in a certain direction. Honestly, I remain surprised that contestants are permitted a final, potentially vindictive, farewell. Hannah got in a back-and-forth with Myha’la that left the latter a bit weepy (Picture: BBC) Hannah has now replaced Myha’la as the player with their back against the wall, which was an inevitability from the moment she agreed to recruitment. Her shocked reaction to the recruitment letter seemed to suss it out too. But she wasn’t about to decline recruitment, because nobody wants to go home, especially so early in the game (just look at how cut up Amol Rajan has been over it). Last week, I was gutted that between her and Jerry, she’s the clear choice to murder, because she had been an impressive player so far, who has apparently spent her evenings mathematically working out every possible combination of Traitors to narrow it down. But impressive players rarely make it far in this game, which is why Jerry could say one nonsensical thing after another all the way to the final. Myha’la clearly saw the power in those final moments to channel attention in a certain direction (Picture: BBC) The Traitors hoped to cause mass confusion with their recruitment, but several immediately saw Hannah had been picked and Myha’la’s final words will only add fuel to that fire. It probably was not the Industry star’s intention to use her closing moments to point directly towards Hannah, but it also wasn’t her intention to look like a Traitor when winking at Richard E Grant. In the castle it doesn’t take much to arouse suspicion. James Acaster and Maya Jama quite happily rolled over Richard and I have no doubt they will be willing to do the same to Hannah. There isn’t yet that bond in the turret that we’ve seen between the likes of Cat Burns and Alan Carr, or Rachel Duffy and Stephen Libby, although it’s still early days. The only reprieve for Hannah will be the scatterbrained thinking among the Faithful. Their Leigh-Anne Pinnock theory appears to have fallen by the wayside, so perhaps the cloud of suspicion around Hannah will go the same way. But even if it does, Hannah’s intelligence is a routine talking point in discussions around the castle. It makes me certain she will eventually return to the hotel to pack her bags just as Myha’la has, because she is also too good at her day job.
