BMW X1 LWB bookings open in India ahead of August 21 launch

BMW India has opened bookings for the new X1 LWB ahead of its August 21 launch. The stretched SUV promises more rear-seat space, greater practicality and locally produced luxury at an accessible price.BMW India has opened bookings for the new X1 Long Wheelbase (LWB), ahead of its market launch on August 21. The stretched SUV will be produced locally at BMW Group’s Chennai facility and will be available to book through the company’s authorised dealer network. Customers can also register their interest on BMW India’s website.The X1 LWB will sit below BMW’s other long-wheelbase combustion-engine models in terms of positioning, making it the brand’s most accessible ICE-powered LWB offering in India. It is essentially a more spacious version of the X1, with the additional length aimed primarily at improving rear-seat comfort and practicality.BMW X1 LWB: Bigger dimensionsThe X1 LWB measures 4,616mm in length, 1,845mm in width and 1,641mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,802mm. Compared with the standard X1, it is 116mm longer overall and gets an additional 110mm of wheelbase, while the height has increased by 11mm.Visually, the extended SUV retains the design language of the standard X1. It features the familiar BMW kidney grille, slim LED lighting elements and a crossover-style silhouette. The China-spec version is offered with 19-inch alloy wheels as standard, with 20-inch wheels available as an option. BMW could, however, opt for smaller wheels for the Indian market to improve ride comfort. The additional wheelbase is primarily aimed at making the second row more accommodating. While the overall dashboard and cabin design is expected to remain familiar, the extra length should translate into substantially more legroom for rear passengers.The rear seats are positioned 27mm higher, while the headrest cushions are 37mm wider. Boot space has also increased to 540 litres, up from 476 litres in the standard X1, giving the LWB version a useful advantage for buyers who prioritise luggage capacity.BMW X1 LWB features The X1 LWB is expected to carry over much of the technology and equipment available on the standard SUV. The feature list is likely to include a 10.7-inch touchscreen infotainment system paired with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless smartphone charging, powered front seats and automatic climate control.Other expected equipment includes a powered tailgate, BMW Digital Key, connected-car functions, a Harman Kardon sound system and an automatic parking system.BMW X1 LWB engine and gearboxBMW India is yet to reveal the final specifications of the India-spec X1 LWB. In China, the model is offered with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that develops 204hp and 300Nm. The engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and can be specified with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.It remains to be seen which powertrain and drivetrain combination BMW chooses for India.
