Blumhouse's $240M Horror Hit That Divided A Fanbase Dominates Multiple Streaming Homes

The past year has seen the indie horror enjoying a sharp turnaround in theaters after back-to-back stumbles with Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man reimagining, Jaume Collet-Serra's The Woman in the Yard and the once-anticipated MEGAN 2.0. Beginning with Scott Derrickson's Black Phone 2 nearly matching the success of its predecessor, Blumhouse rode this wave into Lee Cronin's modestly successful Mummy reimagining and the multiple-record-setting Obsession this year. One such hit over the past year was that of the highly-anticipated Five Nights at Freddy's 2, which is back to dominate multiple streaming platforms. The sequel to the 2023 record setter picked up two years after the events of its predecessor, with Josh Hutcherson's Mike and Elizabeth Lail's Vanessa trying to establish a sense of normalcy in their lives after surviving Matthew Lillard's William Afton, only for Piper Rubio's Abby to inadvertently help unleash a new evil as she misses the animatronic spirits she befriended. With a cast mixing new and returning faces, including Freddy Carter, Skeet Ulrich, Mckenna Grace and Megan Fox, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 was an even bigger critical misfire than the original, securing a paltry 17% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Much like the first film, though, audiences were much more favorable towards the horror sequel, not only securing it an 82% approval rating, but also a strong box office haul, grossing just shy of $240 million worldwide. Now, some nine months after the sequel hit theaters, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is back as a major streaming hit, currently sitting high in both Netflix and HBO Max's Top 10 charts. The Blumhouse film is situated just behind fellow video game adaptation Mortal Kombat II on the latter platform in the No. 2 spot on worldwide charts, while holding the No. 3 spot on the former's Top 10, sitting just behind Kevin Hart's 72 Hours and the Taye Diggs-led rom-com Terry McMillan Presents: His, Hers & Ours. This certainly isn't the first time Five Nights at Freddy's 2 has found itself high on a platform's streaming charts, as the sequel previously enjoyed a fair amount of viewership upon its Peacock premiere in April. While on the NBCUniversal-owned streamer, the film often held the No. 1 spot for the weeks that followed before quietly falling off shortly into May. Even beyond its previous success, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 charting high on Netflix shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, as the Blumhouse sequel just hit the platform beginning August 3, and fresh releases often end up in the Top 10 within their first few days of premiere. Its continued HBO Max success in international regions, however, does come as something of a surprise, as it has been available on WarnerMedia's streamer for nearly two months. Regardless of the reasons behind its multi-platform resurgence, Five Nights at Freddy's 2's newfound success is sure to further cement Blumhouse and Universal's push on a third installment. It was recently reported that IT franchise vet Gary Dauberman has been tapped to pen the script for the next Five Nights, making it the first to not be written by franchise creator Scott Cawthon. While the speed of its arrival will ultimately hinge on confidence in the new screenplay, the sequel's latest streaming dominance could see things expedited.
