Blizzard Might Be Teasing a New StarCraft Game

There's something odd happening on the StarCraft website. While the content still features StarCraft Remastered, which launched back in 2017, the page now seems to be glitching out, with various elements, images, and text blocks flickering on-screen randomly. Could Blizzard be teasing a new StarCraft game? That would make sense. A report earlier this year said that Blizzard had partnered with Korean gaming giant Nexon to develop a new StarCraft shooter. Blizzard declined to comment on the matter at the time, and the partnership remains unconfirmed, but a report yesterday from South Korean newspaper Chosun (via Wccftech) reaffirms that Nexon is seeking a license to develop a new StarCraft game.Meanwhile, Blizzard may have been working on its own new StarCraft game, as per a 2024 job posting for an "upcoming open-world shooter." Reports from that time suggested the title was in development at Blizzard, led by former Far Cry executive producer Dan Hay, who joined the company in 2022.Another point of evidence is that BlizzCon returns on September 12 after a three-year hiatus, and Blizzard will undoubtedly want to make a splash there with big news beyond its ongoing franchises. There's also a conspicuous hour-long gap on BlizzCon's day-one mainstage programming, while all other panels only have 15 minutes of downtime between them. Sure seems like the place for something that gets announced during the opening ceremonies. StarCraft as a franchise has sat dormant since 2017's remaster of the original game, which will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2028. StarCraft 2 launched in 2010, with its subsequent expansions concluding in 2015. Meanwhile, legendary vaporware third-person shooter StarCraft: Ghost was announced in 2002 and eventually confirmed to be cancelled in 2014. I can't verify exactly how long the glitch effect on the StarCraft website has been live, but I haven't seen anyone talking about it yet, and the most recent Wayback Machine capture of the page from just over a week ago doesn't show the effect (though I can't be sure if the Wayback Machine would properly capture and show it). It's unclear if this tease is related to Blizzard's own game, the one from the Nexon partnership, if those two games are one in the same, if either of them are StarCraft 3, or none of the above. IGN has reached out to Blizzard for comment on both the tease and the Nexon partnership, and will update this article if we hear back. Either way, BlizzCon is just over a week away, so a formal announcement could be just on the horizon. Bo Moore is IGN's Senior Manager of Tech.
