With two movies, featuring talented actors like Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Rutger Hauer, and many more, the cyberpunk sci-fi franchise has helped define the genre for generations. 1982's Blade Runner started the universe, with Ridley Scott directing the film. Then, Blade Runner 2049 was released in 2017, bringing back Ford's Rick Deckard and putting him face to face with Gosling's K, directed by Dune's Denis Villeneuve. Now, the dystopian sci-fi franchise gets a new chapter on the small screen. At the 2026 San Diego Comic-Con's Prime Video Presents Blade Runner 2099 and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power panel, where ScreenRant is in attendance, Prime Video released the first trailer for Blade Runner 2099, with the sci-fi series confirmed to debut on November 25. The trailer sets up how much the world has changed since Gosling's outing. In Prime Video's Blade Runner 2099, humans are no longer in control and hunting replicants, as the game has shifted. The footage begins with Euphoria star Hunter Schafer's Cora explaining that there has been a war in the 50 years since the events of Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049, and humans lost, with the replicants now ruling society and humans in short supply. As the Blade Runner 2099 trailer shows, that societal change is now in full effect, and Cora, one of the few humans left, has had to become a fugitive in order to survive. Previously, the first look at Blade Runner 2099, as revealed by Entertainment Weekly, with images depicting Schaefer's Cora and Michelle Yeoh's Blade Runner called Olwen, also came with the reveal that Cora will be pretending to be a replicant in the sci-fi series set in the sci-fi franchise spearheaded by Scott and inspired by Philip K. Dick's 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? If the story of Schaefer's Cora feels similar to that of Ford's Deckard in the original movie, making the new Blade Runner 2099 player his perfect replacement, then the fact that Yeoh's Olwen is described as "taking the Roy Batty story from the first film" in the EW interview, makes her the replacement for Hauer's character, though the show is taking it from "the replicant’s point of view.” At the panel, ScreenRant heard about how Yeoh's character knows that her days are limited, so she is very focused on the task at hand. Other details revealed at the panel include a fun story about how Yeoh got Schaefer a helmet as a joke after the latter suffered a concussion during Blade Runner 2099 filming. The Euphoria star was also unsure about working on another TV show, but the scripts for the Prime Video sci-fi series were so good that Schaefer decided to take on the scrappy Cora. The show will have many connections to the established Blade Runner canon, and showrunner Silka Luisa highlighted how it is very much building off the ending of Blade Runner 2049. The Blade Runner 2099 trailer has shown that the sci-fi series will come with top-notch CGI, making its dystopian world as immersive as the movies. The visuals look close to what was seen in the excellent Blade Runner 2049, with neon-soaked cities, advanced technology, and more making it a cyberpunk project that could land among Prime Video's biggest TV shows to date. While the replicants have won, the humans have not given up, as the trailer teases that they will keep fighting to get the old world back, pursuing what was once theirs, though the replicants will not make it easy for them, as Yeoh's Olwen makes it clear to Cora that it is the replicants' time now. The first Blade Runner 2099 trailer sets the upcoming Prime Video series to be a gritty dystopian sci-fi story with plenty of action sequences, a large scope, stunning visuals, movie-like VFX, and a complex debate over who is right and wrong.
