Black Sabbath icon Tony Iommi announces first solo album in over 20 years, ‘From The Dark’: “It rocks!”

Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has announced new album ‘From The Dark’ – his first solo record in over two decades. Check out lead single ‘World Alone’ below. It also marks his first new music since the death of Black Sabbath bandmate Ozzy Osbourne last July. Visit here to pre-order. For the record, the legendary guitarist is joined throughout by Norwegian vocalist Jorn Lande, who shares writing credits on all songs, as well Becky Baldwin on bass and Karl Brazil on drums. Together, they create a sonic, thunderous collection of eight songs, with themes that centre around the fleeting nature of the human experience. The first preview of the album is out now in the form of blistering lead single ‘World Alone’ – which received its premiere this afternoon at a special global streaming event in Iommi’s hometown of Birmingham. The preview took place close to where the famous Black Sabbath Bridge is located, which was opened as a civic tribute to the iconic band in 2019. For the single, Iommi embraces rock operatic throughout, and is joined by Lande for vocals. It also comes with a video set in a retrofuture, dystopian landscape, where one lone person, The Believer, is sucked into a twisted video game and desperately tries to find salvation. ‘From The Dark’ sees Iommi take on production duties too alongside Mike Exeter, his long-time creative partner, co-writer, producer and audio engineer, and speaking about the record, the guitarist shared: “It’s an album we’ve really enjoyed making. We’re not trying to prove anything – it’s a great album, it rocks!” Recommended The themes of existential questioning and humanity are seen on other tracks including ‘Stormwatcher’ and ‘Over The Sun’, while some of the heaviest tracks on the album are ‘Return Of The Arbalist’, ‘Legacy’, and ‘Black Times’. From The Dark will be available in several deluxe vinyl and CD formats, and the deluxe CD version will contain two bonus tracks called ‘Scent Of Dark’ and ‘Defied’. The heavy metal pioneer died on July 22 2025, aged 76. The Prince Of Darkness’ passing came just over two weeks after he played his final-ever live show at Birmingham’s Villa Park – which included appearances from Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Lamb Of God, Tool, Mastodon, Alice In Chains, Guns N’ Roses, Halestorm, Gojira and more – and it was later confirmed that his cause of death was a heart attack. To mark one year on, there was the first ever “Ozzy Day” held in his Birmingham hometown last week, with fans showing up to pay their respects, a brass band performing Black Sabbath classics, the mechanical “Ozzy The Bull” statue in New Street station being decorated with the singer’s iconic glasses and more. The singer’s three Black Sabbath bandmates also paid tribute to the metal icon. Bassist Geezer Butler wrote on Instagram: “One year ago today- hard to believe. I am so glad we were able to do the final show, back in our hometown, just a couple of weeks before Ozzy left us. Gone in body, but his legend lives on. Such incredible memories. Ozzy forever!” Drummer Bill Ward took to X/Twitter to share: “Every day, there is persistent silence. We miss you so much. Respectfully, with love to the Osbourne Family, Bill and Jackie Ward Family.” Iommi shared a touching message on Instagram, saying that he “still can’t believe that he’s not with us”. “I watch him on YouTube and it feels like he’s still here with us. We always stayed in touch, almost every week or so and we’d usually talk about our ailments and then about what we’d been doing that particular week,” he added. “The fans have been absolutely brilliant and the love and respect that they have shown for him has just been amazing. I’m so glad that we were able to play one final show with the original line up of Sabbath at the ‘Back To The Beginning’ show in our home town of Birmingham,” the guitarist continued. “There will never be another Ozzy. I miss you my dear friend.”
