With Labor Day behind us, the unofficial start of autumn is here, which can only mean one thing for us beauty lovers: It’s time to break out the fall manicures. Trending so far this season are chocolate brown nails, burgundy nails, and the celeb-approved black cherry nails. The latter has serious range—with everyone from edgy Rosé to chic J.Lo signing off, it’s clear they’re versatile enough for anyone to wear. “In fall, clients naturally start asking for deeper, richer colors, and black cherry gives them that seasonal mood without going completely black,” says nail artist Viktoriia Voloshyna. “It makes a statement, but it still feels classic and wearable.”Sooo... what exactly makes this mani color different from all the other vampy reds we tend to reach for every fall and winter? (Cue the “they’re so different” line from The Devil Wears Prada.) “Black cherry is a deep, saturated red that sits somewhere between cherry red, burgundy, and plum,” says Voloshyna. “In softer lighting, it can look almost black, but when the light hits the nails, the red undertone becomes visible. That contrast is what gives the color so much depth.” The deep shade is moody, yes, but more than that, it has a bit of a chameleon-like quality. One minute, your nails could look nearly black, but the next, those juicy garnet undertones peek through, giving the manicure a richness and dimension that your standard dark red won’t quite replicate. Voloshyna adds that it pairs “beautifully” with fall colors like gray, cream, camel, chocolate brown, and navy. There are a couple different ways to create the look. “The first is simply to find a ready-made black cherry shade with the right balance of deep red, burgundy, and plum,” says Voloshyna. Think shades like DND Nail Lacquer in Cherry Mocha, OPI Nail Lacquer in Black Cherry Chutney, and Essie Nail Color in Wicked. The second option requires using two polishes but gives a little extra depth. If you want to go a little more DIY, “apply an opaque black base and layer a translucent dark red jelly gel over it,” says Voloshyna. “The black creates the depth, while the transparent red layer gives the nails that rich cherry reflection when the light hits them.” She finishes both versions with a high-gloss top coat to help bring the color to life. The shade looks great on its own, but black cherry makes a great base color for nail art too. Try it with a magnetic cat-eye effect, chrome powder, dimensional details, or a minimal metallic accent, says Voloshyna.Let’s quickly talk nail shape, though there are not hard and fast rules here. “Black cherry works well on almost every shape and length,” says Voloshyna. It really just comes down to how you want your mani to feel—think about if you like bold and striking or subtle and classic. “On short square or soft-square nails, it looks clean, modern, and polished,” explains Voloshyna. “Almond and oval shapes make it feel more elegant, while longer square or stiletto nails create a more dramatic look.”Black cherry nail inspo pics@betina_goldstein@craftedbyaprince@themaniclub@imarninails@craftedbyaprince@tombachik@samrosenails@raelondonnails@craftedbyaprinceMeet the expertViktoriia Voloshyna is a Los Angeles-based nail artist and educator, international nail competition judge, founder of Tory Pro Nails, and recipient of the 2026 Nail Artist of the Year award. Why trust Cosmopolitan?Catharine Malzahn is a contributing beauty writer at Cosmo.
