Bin collection changes are rolled out for millions of Brits as Met Office issues amber heat warning

BIN collection times have changed in many parts of the UK this week as a fifth heatwave looms. The Met Office has declared amber heat warnings as temperatures are set to rise to 38C in some areas. These changes could affect more than a million residents, with rubbish collection teams set to begin shifts earlier to avoid working during the hottest parts of the day. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! At least 24 councils have announced the rule change, including teh Royal Borough of Greenwhich, Bury Council, Tendring Council and North East Lincolnshire. Collection times could begin as early as 5am, with councils reminding residents to “support crews” in putting their bins out earlier. North East Lincolnshire Council said: “Our crews carry out physically demanding work and provide a vital service to residents. “An earlier start reduces their exposure to heat and ensures that collections can continue safely. ” The council added that residents have been asked to look after crews by providing or filling bottles with water when requested, in order to ensure staff remain hydrated amid the hot weather. Councils have also apologised for any delays to collection times, as the heat may cause disruption to the running of services across the country. Most read in The Sun This comes as more than 70,000 bin collections were missed over the past month and a half across South Gloucestershire, impacting nearly 12,000 households a week. As a result, opposition Conservative councillors have called the running of waste services “in chaos”. The changes are expected to last until early next week, however, this may be revised if the hot weather persists.
