Billy Bob Thornton's New Landman Season 3 Role Sets Up A Yellowstone Crossover

A tiny detail from Landman’s season 2 finale could be setting up a major Yellowstone crossover for season 3. Landman season 2 ended with Tommy Norris drastically shaking up the status quo of the series. After getting squeezed out of his own job, Tommy decided he was sick of being a middleman between corporate interests, so he’s going into business for himself. In the season 2 finale, Tommy gathered his closest friends, family, and colleagues, and announced that he was starting his own company. With funding from Andy García’s Gallino, Tommy is launching a new venture called CTT Oil Exploration & Cattle. The most exciting thing about the announcement is that he’s filling out his staff and board of directors with all his loved ones: his son Cooper is the president, his best friend and right-hand man Nate is the treasurer, his lawyer Rebecca is the chief legal counsel, and his soon-to-be daughter-in-law Ariana will have an administrative role at the office. It’ll be a ton of fun to have all those characters working together under the same roof; Landman’s scattered cast will finally start to feel like a true ensemble. But the name of the company might be teasing something even more tantalizing. Billy Bob Thornton's Tommy Will Be Running CTT Oil Exploration & Cattle In Landman Season 3 Emerson Miller/Paramount+ By naming Cooper the president of his new company, Tommy affirmed that he would be taking a hands-off approach to this venture. In seasons past, Tommy was constantly on the road, putting out fires (sometimes literally), but now, Cooper is the landman, and Tommy will just be overseeing him. There could be some tension between father and son — they rarely see eye to eye, and I don’t expect that to change now that huge sums of money are on the line — but Tommy is no longer answering to his corporate puppet-masters. CTT Oil Exploration & Cattle will be an independent, family-run business, like the funeral home in Six Feet Under or the titular greasy-spoon diner in Bob’s Burgers. But take another look at that name: CTT Oil Exploration & Cattle. When Tommy described his business plan to all his new partners, it sounded like his sole focus would be drilling for oil, but the name of the company includes “cattle.” He never mentioned anything about cattle, so why is it in the name of the company? He had to add, “& Cattle,” when he registered the business, so there must be a reason. Ostensibly, it might be a way for Tommy to avoid legal headaches with his competitors (and possibly certain tax payments) by nominally implying that the company will also be running cattle on some of the land they’ll be drilling into. It was also a way for Taylor Sheridan to pay homage to the other traditional industry in Texas. But Chekov’s Gun suggests there’s more to it, and Sheridan could well be setting up a ranching-related crossover to bring Landman into the Yellowstone universe. The Name Of Tommy's New Father-Son Operation Sets Up A Major Yellowstone Crossover The main purpose of Tommy’s new company is to get Tommy and Cooper working together. This father-son business venture could turn Landman season 3 into a modern-day There Will Be Blood, but it could also be setting up a crossover with the Yellowstone universe. Landman is confined to the present day (unless we see a prequel about Tommy’s father, T.L., back in a bygone era of the oil industry), but there are a few possibilities for a Yellowstone crossover in Landman. Geographically, it would make sense for Beth and Rip to be involved somewhere, since they’re also in West Texas (albeit further south). Even if it’s just one scene, it would be a joy to see Tommy negotiate with a couple of Duttons in Landman season 3. Release Date November 17, 2024 Network Paramount Showrunner Taylor Sheridan Cast Billy Bob Thornton Tommy Norris Set in West Texas, Landman explores the world of oil rigs and the fortunes they create, with a modern upstairs/downstairs narrative of roughnecks and billionaires, highlighting the profound impact on the climate, economy, and geopolitics in these boomtowns.
