Billy Bob Thornton Officially Finds His Landman Replacement Ahead Of 2027 Return

Published Oct 31, 2026, 1:45 PM EDT Ben Sherlock is a Tomatometer-approved film and TV critic who runs the massively underrated YouTube channel I Got Touched at the Cinema. Before working at Screen Rant, Ben wrote for Game Rant, Taste of Cinema, Comic Book Resources, and BabbleTop. He's also an indie filmmaker, a standup comedian, and an alumnus of the School of Rock. Although Landman keeps teasing potential replacements and future developments, the success of the series rests entirely on Billy Bob Thornton. Thornton’s effortless charisma and cowboy swagger keep Landman more than watchable, even when the cracks in Taylor Sheridan’s high-output, low-effort writing start to show. Landman’s season 2 finale teased Tommy’s son Cooper as his eventual replacement, since Tommy has made Cooper the president of his new company and will be taking a more hands-off role himself. But if, for some reason, Thornton was no longer starring in Landman, and he passed the reins on to his son, the series would instantly lose its appeal. Landman losing Billy Bob would be akin to The Office losing Steve Carell or Two and a Half Men losing Charlie Sheen. Thankfully, despite what the story is suggesting, Thornton doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. Tommy’s latest interaction with the coyote in the season 2 finale seemed to confirm that he’s not done bleeding the oil fields dry yet; he won’t be quitting or retiring until he can bring down the corporate rivals who squeezed him out of his own job — namely, Demi Moore’s Cami Miller — and the funds he’s secured from Gallino will allow him to do that. Thornton isn’t leaving Landman any time soon, but he has lined up a different TV project in between seasons 2 and 3. Since Landman season 3 has been delayed by a few months, Thornton has seized the chance to take on a new series in the meantime. Billy Bob Thornton's The Mayflower Series Debuts November 23rd Before Landman comes back for season 3, Thornton will be back on our screens for a documentary series about the history of the Mayflower. The actor is set to host a three-part docudrama for Fox Nation, entitled Billy Bob Thornton Presents: The Mayflower, which is scheduled to premiere on November 23, three days before Thanksgiving. This new docuseries will explore the complicated history of the voyage of the Mayflower, the First Thanksgiving, and the crucial events that came together to shape the United States. Thornton is a great choice to host a documentary like this. He has a really soothing, intoxicating voice that would keep anyone captivated, and his all-American accent will fit this subject matter like a glove. America’s origin story is in the hands of one of America’s most charming and beloved actors. Landman Season 3 Is Expected To Release In 2027 Emerson Miller/Paramount+ The first two seasons of Landman premiered on a refreshingly regular schedule. Season 1 premiered in November 2024 and, like clockwork, season 2 premiered in November 2025. Unfortunately, the show will be breaking that schedule in its third season, and we won’t be seeing Landman season 3 this November. Filming for Landman season 3 was supposed to start in May 2026, but it got pushed back to September, which meant that everything else got pushed back, too — the editing, the marketing, the release date — and now, Landman won’t premiere its third season until sometime in 2027. James Jordan, a frequent collaborator of Sheridan’s who plays Dale in Landman and also appears in Yellowstone, Lioness, and Those Who Wish Me Dead, has said that filming for season 3 will take place “through the first quarter of next year.” So, we won’t see new episodes until at least the second quarter (and that’s if they edit like the wind). With Tommy setting up his new company and filling out the staff and board of directors with all his friends and loved ones, Landman will be a very different show when it returns for season 3. It’ll be a workplace show about an independent, family-run business, like Bob’s Burgers, and it’ll finally feel like a true ensemble show instead of having everyone scattered across their own separate worlds.
