Billionaire Collector of Legendary Studio Names Uses None of Them

With more than a little help from his father’s piggy bank, David Ellison started Skydance in 2006, and it was… fine, as far as production companies go. Not exactly a brand with a historic legacy, but it had some hits. Now, post-merger and acquisition madness, Ellison controls Paramount and Warner Bros., two of the industry’s most legendary studios with a combined 200+ years of history. So, of course, Ellison has decided to name his new Frankenstein’s monster of a media behemoth… Skydance. Cool, man. In a post on Twitter, Ellison explained his decision (or, more likely, let ChatGPT explain it for him because the statement reeks of AI-generated sludge—though, to be fair, most corpo speak is indistinguishable from bot-slop). “Paramount and Warner Bros. shaped over a century of culture. By combining them, we aren’t rewriting history — we’re equipping these iconic studios with a more powerful engine. Together, we are Skydance: a creative-first home for bold, quality storytelling,” he wrote. According to Ellison, he and his fellow media ghouls selected the name Skydance because they want to “preserve” the legacies of Paramount and Warner Bros. “Both have distinct identities, extraordinary legacies and brands that have resonated with audiences for generations,” he wrote. “We never wanted a new corporate identity to diminish, alter or overshadow either one. Instead, we wanted a name that would give the combined company an identity of its own while allowing Paramount and Warner Bros. — and all our extraordinary brands — to remain in the spotlight.” What once was the peak, is now just the beginning. Just some excellent work. Based on Ellison’s statement, it’d seem that Skydance will continue to use Warner Bros. and Paramount as sort of imprints that operate under its big corporate umbrella. Just how much independence they have, we’ll have to wait and see. Ellison hasn’t exactly kept himself from meddling in the affairs of his acquisitions: he reportedly is the one who tapped the always-failing-up Bari Weiss to run CBS after absorbing the network in the initial acquisition of Paramount. The formation of Skydance will be made official when Paramount’s $110 billion purchase of Warner Bros. officially closes on October 6. Given that the states that sued to block the merger have backed down following a settlement agreement, it seems nothing is going to stop this thing from happening now. At least they didn’t decide to name it WarnerMount or ParaBros. Little victories.
