Warhammer Is Scrapping Its "Traditional" Monthly Free Figure Published Aug 31, 2026, 4:20 PM EDT Niall (pronounced Ny-ul) is a UK-based writer who has been writing about Magic: The Gathering throughout his entire career, with everything from new set breakdowns and individual deck guides to offering his opinions on the state of formats and the general direction of the iconic TCG. Niall also has a rich history covering triple-A releases, sports games, and PC hardware. A big change is coming to a long-standing tradition within Warhammer stores, as September marks the end of the traditional free monthly miniature. You can still claim your free Space Marine Scout from Tuesday, September 1, but in the announcement post for September's freebies, a change has been confirmed, with details promised down the line. Initial player response is mixed, with most assuming that a paid scheme will replace it, while others claim that it will change over and become a pick-a-model scheme where you build and paint your chosen figure in store each month. "Traditional Free Miniature" Scheme To End, Replacement Coming In October The hugely popular free monthly figure scheme at Warhammer is changing forever; we just don't know exactly how. In its announcement post for the free figure and collectible coin for September, Warhammer revealed the following: September's Miniature of the Month also marks a big change in the monthly in-store offer. It's the last of the traditional free miniatures you can get for stopping by your local Warhammer store, but don't worry — an exciting new offer is launching in October! For many, the monthly free figure scheme is a reason to visit their local stores. They pick up and build the monthly figure, stock up on any supplies they need, then might not see the inside of a Warhammer store until the following month. It's no secret that Warhammer wants you to be more engaged with its stores, visiting and spending money regularly while also getting your friends and even family into the hobby. The monthly collectible coin, which requires a minimum spend, is an homage to Ogor miniatures and celebrates the launch of Destruction Battletome: Ogor Martribes. How big a role the monthly freebie played in this is unknown, but based on the immediate reaction of players, it's disappointing to see it go, but they're more worried about what comes next. Pick-A-Figure Scheme Coming, It's Claimed While many of the players' responses to this news on social media are either speculative about what may replace the free monthly figure or complaining that the stock either never reached local stores or was gone before they could claim it, one response stood out above the rest. Reddit user u/AnxietyAnkylosaurus claims to have spoken to someone at their local store (framed as though it is a member of staff in a later comment), and they claim that the new scheme will let you pick a model from a range of between eight and ten varieties to be built and painted in-store. If this is the case, then the scheme technically isn't a downgrade, but it may depend on how often the range of miniatures rotates. If certain figures are also more popular, it could mean getting the same figure over and over if you're late to the party. I think it's hugely important to maintain a free monthly figure scheme in some capacity; it's a nice offering for players who are loyal to the game and Warhammer stores while also being a good way for hobbyists who just like painting to continue to expand their collection without having to buy bulkier products. Time will tell whether this pick-a-figure scheme is the true replacement, but we'll keep you up to date with any development has the happen.
