On Tuesday (Aug. 25), Beyoncé shared an emotional tribute to Parton on her official website, recalling the impact the country star had on her and countless other artists. “Dolly, you were the barometer. The North Star. Bold and brilliant. Talented and tenacious,” Beyoncé wrote. “You taught so many lessons on how to be uniquely oneself.” The superstar went on to thank Parton for her artistry and influence, writing that she was “grateful for your art, your heart, your generosity, your humor, your entrepreneurship.” “I’m honored that I had the privilege to work with you. I will treasure that forever,” Beyoncé continued. “Thank you for your profound impact on the world.” Beyoncé concluded her message by describing Parton as “an angel who has made this world a happier place because of your joyful art,” adding, “You are truly one of one. Rest peacefully.” Parton was featured on Beyoncé’s 2024 country-inspired album Cowboy Carter, lending her voice to the album’s “Dolly P” interlude before introducing Beyoncé’s reimagining of Parton’s 1973 classic “Jolene.” Parton’s voicemail on “Dolly P” directly set up Beyoncé’s version of the song, which featured newly written lyrics and a more confrontational take on its narrator’s warning to Jolene. Beyoncé’s reinvention landed on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 7, surpassing the original version’s peak at No. 60 back in 1974. Their collaboration came as Beyoncé began to shift and experiment with country music and the genre’s Black roots and broader history on Cowboy Carter. The album featured a number of country legends and collaborators, with Parton’s presence serving as a meaningful bridge between Beyoncé’s contemporary interpretation and one of country music’s eternal voices. Parton died Tuesday in Nashville at age 80, her family announced.
