Beyonce celebrates turning 45 with deluxe anniversary editions of B’Day album

Beyonce has released a 20th anniversary edition of her B’Day album with a Latin twist and featuring artists such as Maluma and a posthumous collaboration with Selena.The US superstar has marked the milestone, which coincides with her 45th birthday on Friday, with a 31-track digital deluxe edition featuring bonus songs, new remixes and Spanish language recordings.Beyonce released the hit record, which is her second studio album, in 2006 and it reached number one in the US, Canada and Taiwan, and is known for tracks such as Irreplaceable, Deja Vu and Get Me Bodied.“I wanted the album to be big, percussive, hard, up-tempo, and energised, and it was important to me that we used live instrumentation,” Beyonce said, reflecting on the inspiration behind the original record.“Hip-hop was taking over at the time, but I was fighting to preserve the bridges, melodies, and harmonies that have always been at the heart of R&B.“The goal was to blend those two worlds through the art of sampling.“I loved the minimalism of a beautiful vocal arrangement over a simple drum loop or a classic guitar like Irreplaceable… but only if that 808 was banging underneath.”Beyonce expresses her admiration for the Spanish language and culture in the anniversary edition of the album, which features a new version of Irreplaceable incorporating vocals from the late Selena Quintanilla.The Mexican-American singer, who died aged 23 in 1995, was nicknamed the Queen of Tejano Music and is famed for her impact in bringing the genre into the mainstream and for breaking boundaries for Latin artists.Beyonce features Selena on the special edition of her B’Day record (PA)PA ArchiveThe posthumous collaboration, which was approved by her estate, incorporates her voice alongside Beyonce’s Spanish-singing vocals on Irreemplazable (Como La Flor).B’Day (20th Anniversary Edition) features Beyonce’s first collaboration with Colombian artist Maluma on Cuerpo Tumbao, which also contains a sample of La Negra Tiene Tumbao by Afro-Cuban artist Celia Cruz.Other releases include previously unseen imagery shot on location in New Orleans, which has deep ties to Beyonce’s family and is where she filmed her Deja Vu music video with her husband Jay-Z.Read MoreIt is accompanied by remastered and recoloured versions of her music videos finished in 4K, as well as B-sides such as Lost Yo Mind, Creole and Back Up – which were not included on the record in 2006.Beyonce holds the record for the most awards and most-nominated artist in Grammys history (Matt Crossick/PA)PA WireMy First Time is among the new releases, as the singer treats fans to a song originally recorded for her debut solo album Dangerously In Love, but was ultimately removed from its final tracklist.A previously unheard track produced by Beyonce and Pharrell titled Can I Watch You is also among the additions featured on the new edition.Beyonce released Morning Dew (Donk) earlier this year as she announced the 20th anniversary celebrations, and later unveiled a fresh remix of the track featuring Jay-Z.The singer began her career alongside Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams in Destiny’s Child and has gone on to have six UK number one singles and five UK number one albums.Beyonce holds the record for the most Grammy wins and is the most-nominated artist in the awards’ history.She married rapper Jay-Z, real name Shawn Carter, in 2008 and the couple have three children: Blue Ivy, Rumi and Sir.
