Bengaluru residents may soon have to pay substantially higher parking charges, with the Karnataka government notifying draft rules proposing annual residential parking permits of up to Rs 25,000 and hourly on-street parking fees of up to Rs 80 for cars across the Greater Bengaluru Area. The Urban Development Department has issued the draft Greater Bengaluru Area (Parking) Rules, 2026, inviting objections and suggestions from the public within 30 days of its publication in the official Gazette on August 11.Under the proposed rules, annual residential parking permits will be linked to the type of vehicle. Owners of small cars may have to pay Rs 15,000 per year, while sedans would attract a fee of Rs 20,000 and SUVs Rs 25,000.DRAFT PROPOSES CHARGES FOR COMMERCIAL PLACES TOOThe draft policy also proposes revised charges for on-street parking in commercial and other non-residential areas. Cars could be charged between Rs 40 and Rs 80 per hour, depending on the category of the road, while two-wheelers may be required to pay Rs 20 to Rs 40 per hour. Parking rates will vary according to road classification. Under the proposal, on-street parking for cars will cost Rs 40 per hour on Category C roads, Rs 60 on Category B roads and Rs 80 on Category A roads. Two-wheelers would be charged Rs 20, Rs 30 and Rs 40 per hour, respectively. The draft rules also seek to promote the use of organised parking facilities by making off-street parking comparatively cheaper. Hourly off-street parking charges for cars have been proposed at Rs 20 to Rs 40, while two-wheelers would pay between Rs 10 and Rs 20 per hour. Monthly off-street parking fees are proposed to range from Rs 1,000 to Rs 4,000. The draft also offers a 50 per cent concession on monthly off-street parking charges for vehicles parked between 8 pm and 8 am.WHY THE POLICY?In a bid to discourage prolonged occupation of public parking spaces, the policy proposes progressively higher charges for vehicles parked on roads for more than two hours. If implemented, the new rules would significantly change Bengaluru's parking management by introducing market-linked pricing for public parking spaces and encouraging motorists to shift to designated off-street parking facilities. The government has invited members of the public to submit their objections and suggestions before the rules are finalised.- EndsPublished By: Ritaban MisraPublished On: Aug 13, 2026 20:01 IST
