Ben Johnson: Caleb Williams has it all, there's nothing he can't do

Published July 29, 2026 07:05 AM Bears head coach Ben Johnson says he has a uniquely talented quarterback in Caleb Williams.“He’s got it all,” Johnson said of Williams. “There’s really nothing he can’t do. Elite arm talent, playmaking ability, escape-ability. He has his legs that he can hurt a defense with. There’s just so many layers to who he is as a player. That word ‘consistency’ comes up over the course of a 60-minute game — or more if we need it — where we’re getting high-level quarterback play throughout that game. You see flashes of it, and we’re trying to tap into that, where we’re just consistently delivering the ball where it needs to go, giving it to our guys, and then we all know that he has that ability to put on that Superman cape when the time calls for it.”Johnson did acknowledge that he needs to see improvement in Williams’ completion percentage. Last year Williams completed just 58.1 percent of his passes, which ranked dead last among the 32 quarterbacks who threw at least 250 passes in 2025. This year Johnson wants to see Williams complete 70 percent of his passes.“He’s done a great job over the spring and summer, just looking at himself, body position-wise, from an accuracy standpoint, are my feet aligned to where I want to throw the ball?” Johnson said. “The ability to see where I should go with the football, to process a little faster, that’s where I’m hopeful that we see another step in terms of the processing speed.”A 70 percent completion rate, which only one quarterback in the NFL (Drake Maye) achieved last season, may be an unrealistic expectation for Williams. But Johnson believes Williams is capable of doing just about anything at the quarterback position.
