The moment the rooster let out his loud “Cock-a-doodle-doo”, the school bell woke up with a jolt and sat up straight. She blinked sleepily and looked around. The schoolyard was quiet and empty; no children, teachers, nobody at all. “Why did you crow so early?” she asked.“It’s my choice,” clucked the rooster proudly, fluffing his red feathers. “I crow whenever I feel like it. Freedom, you know.”“Lucky you,” the bell said, rolling her eyes. The rooster giggled cheekily. “Exactly. Tick-tock, ring-ring for you.”The bell went silent. Then she thought, hmmm… grrr! “Not anymore,” she muttered.Soon, it was prayer time. The school buzzed with excited children in crisp uniforms, chattering like little sparrows.“Paltu, ring the bell,” called Principal Sir from the verandah.RebellionThe bell felt a wave of anger rise. As Paltu picked her up, she shouted loudly, “I don’t feel like ringing today.”Paltu blinked in surprise. “Then, how will the children gather for prayer?”“I don’t know,” she snapped, swinging wildly. But Paltu didn’t listen. Tap! Tap! TAP! TANN! TANN! TANN!The sound echoed across the schoolyard. The bell grew red with anger. “That’s it!” she cried. Suddenly ... whoosh ... she jumped from Paltu’s hands and rolled away.“The bell ran away,” Paltu yelled, in surpriseThe children burst into laughter. Some clapped, some pointed, and others ran behind her as if it were a game.Principal Sir came running, clutching his round tummy. He waddled a few steps, but soon he was huffing and puffing.“Quick, Paltu … chase the bell,” he gasped.Paltu dashed forward, but the bell was too quick. She rolled into the storeroom and hid behind dusty boxes. Suddenly, a group of mice ran out, and a heavy box slipped and fell right on top of the bell.Everyone bellowed, “Catch it.” Catch it!”But the bell wriggled free and rolled out again, faster than before. She bounced through the gate and reached the busy road. There was a traffic jam. Vehicles stood stuck in long lines. Nearby, an ambulance stood still. The driver looked worried and helpless.Helping hand“What happened?” the bell asked gently, slowing down.“My siren is broken,” the driver said anxiously. “I must reach the hospital quickly. Someone needs help urgently.”The bell paused for a moment. Then she said bravely, “Use me.”The driver picked her up and began to ring .... TANN! TANN! TANN! Illustration: Prajakta Kharche The loud sound echoed through the street. People quickly moved aside. The traffic cleared, and the ambulance sped ahead. At the hospital gate, the driver smiled, “You are wonderful. Ringing at the right time matters more than ringing whenever you want.”The bell felt something warm and happy rise inside her! Maybe, ringing wasn’t so bad after all.Quietly, she slipped into a priest’s cloth bag nearby. The priest walked toward the temple. Inside, the bag, the bell peeked out. At the temple, people were worried.“The temple bell is missing,” said a woman.“It must have been stolen,” cried a man.“What shall we do now?” the priest wondered aloud.Suddenly, the bell jumped out, “I’m here. Let’s ring for prayers!”Everyone’s faces lit up with joy. The priest smiled and began the prayer. Later that day, Paltu arrived at the temple. “Please help me find our school bell,” he prayed softly, folding his hands. The priest looked surprised. “Oh, I found a bell today. Could it be yours?”“My bell,” Paltu cried with joy. “Without you, the children had no assembly, ate lunch late, and even recess got delayed.”The bell felt a little embarrassed. Then she spoke gently, “Today I learned something very important. Ringing at the right time helps everyone. I will never run away again.”Paltu smiled warmly, hugged the bell, and gave her a little kiss. The bell giggled. “Come on, let’s go back to school.”Together, they returned happily, bright and cheerful once again.
