Being married to Katy Perry left convicted rapist Russell Brand feeling 'inadequate' as he resented her dream of becoming the world's 'most famous pop star'.Brand, 51, who was this week convicted of rape and three counts of sexual assault and is facing years behind bars, is said to have become frustrated by his former wife's ambition. The pair met in 2009 on the set of Get Him To The Greek, when Perry, 42, filmed a cameo for the movie which briefly propelled Brand to the status of Hollywood's darling. They then met up again at the MTV Video Music Awards three months later, and their romance took off.He asked Perry to marry him on New Year's Eve in India, and the pair then married in a traditional Hindu ceremony in Rajasthan, India, the following year. But their whirlwind marriage was over just 14 months later and they divorced in 2012.During the early months of her relationship with Brand, Perry spoke to American presenter Ryan Seacrest and described him as 'like Oscar Wilde meets Dudley Moore meets Jim Morrison meets a little Elvis Presley meets Charles Manson … that's the curveball, by the way'.But the mood soon soured, as Perry's musical career taking off coincided with Brand's Hollywood flop, Arthur. Katy Perry and Russell Brand are pictured together at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Madrid in 2010 Brand and his wife Laura Gallacher arrive at Southwark Crown Court during the trial on November 3Brand's defence tried to claim in court that he had changed after meeting the US singer, with him famously dedicating his second memoir, Booky Wook 2: This Time It's Personal, to her.He wrote within it that after their first date he decided: 'No more women. Well, actually, thousands of women. I wake up to a different one each day, but they're all her.' However, more than a year after meeting Perry and just three months before their marriage, he stands accused of sexually assaulting a woman on the set of Arthur. The 1981 Dudley Moore film remake, in which Brand played the eponymous character, did not perform well.An actress is now claiming in a civil suit that Brand exposed himself to her on set and went on to sexually assault her in a toilet. After the couple wed at the lavish ceremony attended by David Walliams and Jonathan Ross, trouble began brewing.Perry released her hit Teenage Dream, and her career soared.Brand, meanwhile, began finding himself spending long stints at home alone while she was touring, and is said to have mocked her behind her back. Brand broke up with Perry via text message just before she was due to perform on stage (Pictured in January 2010)A source told The Times: 'Initially he loved the idea of this American starlet on his arm, but he's in his mid-thirties at this point, she's a decade younger and Russell then wanted the wife at home, having babies.'And he just couldn't cope with her star eclipsing his — he would mock her, and be mean behind her back.' A second added he began 'resenting' her success and described him as 'selfish to the extreme'. Ultimately, Brand would break up with his wife via text message. He did so in an eerie echo of his proposal, opting to tell her on New Year's Eve – just before she went on stage to perform. The moment, in which Perry is seen sobbing before plastering on a smile to appear on stage, was captured in her documentary, Katy Perry: Part of Me. Their divorce was finalised in 2012.They are understood to have not spoken since, and Perry is now dating former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.Shortly after the break up, Perry spoke to American Vogue in 2013 and described how Brand wanted 'an equal' at first, but later changed. She said: 'I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they're like, "I can't handle the equalness".We go behind the curtain as Russell Brand is found guiltyHi, I'm Alex Matthews, Editor of The Crime Desk.Russell Brand has been found guilty of rape and three sexual assaults - and our reporters Caroline Cheetham and Liz Hull covered every single day of the case at Southwark Crown Court. He should be in jail.'Yesterday it was reported that Perry could have been in the room, or around in the immediate aftermath, of one of the sexual assaults Brand has been convicted of. She was all but wiped from existence in Brand's trial, but during legal arguments it was heard how she could have witnessed the assault. In legal argument ahead of the case going before a jury, it was claimed Ms Perry may have been in the room when Russell Brand put his head in a woman's lap during filming for Channel 4.Ian Winter KC, defending, said of the 2009 incident: 'She [the victim] says that other people were in the room and witnessed it, possibly including the defendant's future wife, Ms Katy Perry.'The Met Police did not approach Perry for a statement, it is understood. Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC agreed to remove her name from the proceedings, saying: 'For the avoidance of doubt, the prosecution recognise that matters post-2009 involving his relationship with Katy Perry may be sensitive, as may his previous faiths, and we are content to remove these.' The Met Police has confirmed investigations are ongoing into two allegations of rape made against Brand, and its chief Sir Mark Rowley said he would not be surprised if 'many more' alleged victims of Brand now came forward. At pre-trial court hearings, it was revealed one of the complaints comes from a woman who dated Brand when he was 30 and she was a 16-year-old schoolgirl.
